Coup Successful[]

(If Kurt’s first two personal quests were not completed)

Defeat Kurt[]

  • Constantin: Kurt! What is… What’s going on? Is there something wrong?
  • Kurt: Coin Guards! The time has come.
  • Constantin: But… What is this?
  • Kurt: Ready arms!
  • Constantin: Kurt, what are you doing?
  • Kurt: Aim!
  • Constantin: Stop that, soldiers! Lower your weapons! Now!
  • Kurt: Sorry, Green Blood.
  • De Sardet: Fight with honor!
  • Kurt: (draws his sword) En garde! I said draw!
  • (Enter combat with Kurt)
  • De Sardet: Stop it, Kurt!
  • Kurt: Wait!
  • De Sardet: Speak! Why did you betray us?
  • Kurt: Our commander figured out that we could easily take control of this island. You rely so heavily on our protection. You are so dependent…so naive. All the governors will suffer the same attacks if they haven't already. Your problems are far from over, Green Blood. The commander is there on the docks, with all his lieutenants. I failed, but they will certainly succeed, here or elsewhere on the island. Not every governor has a cousin that I trained personally for combat.
    • Execute him.
      • Result: De Sardet kills Kurt
    • Spare him.
      • De Sardet: It's over, you were defeated! You have no honor!
      • Kurt: I agree with you. But I did train you well, at least there's that.
      • De Sardet: The student surpasses the master, and you cannot bear it.
      • Kurt: You are wrong. I am proud of you. Truly.
      • Result: Kurt kills himself
  • Constantin: Thank you. You saved us all. The nerve of them.
  • De Sardet: What else was there to expect from employing coin-fed mercenaries? All that liberty, so close to power, it went to their heads! It would have happened sooner or later. They could’ve been preparing this sort of coup for years.
  • Vasco: Without wanting to rush you, bantering about the dangers of according one’s trust to a sellsword is appropriate, but…
  • De Sardet: You’re right, it’s time for action! We need to get you somewhere safe, Constantin.
  • Constantin: Those are my advisors that you must protect. Me, I want to—
  • De Sardet: To join in? Look at your condition! It’s out of the question, we are taking you somewhere safe.
  • Constantin: As you've left me no choice… There is a hiding place in the cellar.
  • De Sardet: We will take care of your advisors after that.
  • Vasco: And we should make these conger eels pay for their treachery.
  • Petrus: And attempt to stop the coups in other cities.
  • De Sardet: Then we have no time to lose! Let us be gone.

Ensure Constantin is safe[]

  • Petrus: These traitors will not be shaken by Kurt’s death for very long. They are most likely gathering as we speak to prevent us from accessing the cellar.
  • De Sardet: Stay behind us, Constantin. You’re in no condition to fight.
  • De Sardet: We must hurry, before the Guard can act.
  • De Sardet: We’ve reached the cellar, it looks like a good place to hide. Constantin, promise me that you will stay here until we secure the city.
  • Constantin: Do I even have a choice? Here I am consigned to my quarters like some broken old maid.
  • De Sardet: Like someone ill, Constantin. Someone who is dear to me. And the city wouldn’t survive your loss.
  • Constantin: You have such a way with words. Very well, I promise to stay here, obediently awaiting your return.
  • De Sardet: Let’s go then!
  • Constantin: And cousin? Watch out for yourself. You are dear to me as well.

Ensure Constantin's advisors are safe[]

  • De Sardet: Lord de Courcillon!
  • Sir de Courcillon: De Sardet! You’ve come at a serendipitous moment! I thought my hour had come. What’s happening?
  • De Sardet: A coup d’état, professor. The Coin Guard tried to assassinate my cousin and is plotting the same actions against the other governors.
  • Sir de Courcillon: So, they have finally done it. Such proximity to power is a terrible temptation. It was only a question of time before they succumbed.
  • De Sardet: We should’ve paid more attention to your lessons, we might've been able to avoid all this. Follow me. I’m taking you somewhere safe.
  • Sir de Courcillon: I’m coming!
  • De Sardet: Lord Minister!
  • Diplomatic Affairs Advisor: Ah! Friendly faces, finally! What a relief! I was in this room when I heard sounds of  battle. Fearing for my life, I hid myself in here. But what is going on? What madness has befallen the palace?
  • De Sardet: It’s a coup d’état! The Coin Guard wants to take control of the island by assassinating all its governors.
  • Diplomatic Affairs Advisor: The Guard is everywhere. They could succeed!
  • De Sardet: We will do everything in our power to thwart them. Come now, we’ll take you somewhere safe.
  • Diplomatic Affairs Advisor: I’ll follow you!
  • De Sardet: You are safe here.
  • Diplomatic Affairs Advisor: You have my eternal gratitude, Excellency. We owe you our lives.
  • De Sardet: You will be safe here.
  • Sir de Courcillon: Thank you, my friend. I will never forget what you’ve done for me.

Save Madam De Morange[]

  • De Sardet: Lady Morange! Make ready to depart, we cannot remain here.
  • Lady Morange: But what is going on?
  • De Sardet: The Coin Guard has decided to take control of the isle. They plan to overthrow the governors. They were set on assassinating Constantin and his entire entourage.
  • Lady Morange: The idiots!
  • De Sardet: You are in danger. Do you know a safe place we could take you?
  • Lady Morange: Don’t worry about me. I have friends here, they will hide me. Go! And do be careful!
  • (Approaching the Coin Guard barracks)
  • De Sardet: If I remember correctly, Torsten’s quarters are in the right wing.
  • (If present) Petrus: It will probably be very well-guarded, and if we make too much noise, he could run away.
  • (If present) Vasco: Going in through the front door would be dangerous, and the noise of the battle could make him run away.
  • De Sardet: You’re not wrong. If we’re to stop him, we had better be discreet.
  • (If present) Petrus: I’m almost positive that there’s a passage leading to the barracks in the tavern, it could be a discreet way of getting inside.
  • (If present) Vasco: I believe that there's a passage leading to the barracks in the tavern. We could use it to our advantage.
  • De Sardet: We could also climb up the left wing’s scaffolding, we’d reach the upper floor directly.

Arrest the Coin's lieutenants (3)[]

  • Lieutenant Rein: I’m sorry, Your Excellency, I know you’ve paid your entry fee, but this is a special night. My orders are not to let anyone in.
    • Try to bribe him (50 gold)
      • De Sardet: What if I paid you a supplement for your good services?
      • Lieutenant Rein: Very well, you can come in. I hope I won't be in trouble.
      • (Proceed downstairs)
    • Do not insist and leave
      • De Sardet: I had higher expectations for this place. Very well, I'll let you get on, soldier.
      • Lieutenant Rein: I’m really sorry for the inconvenience. Have a great night, Your Excellency!
      • (Leave - must return and select Bribe to progress)
  • Corporal Kathrin: I regret, [milord | milady], we are closed this evening.
  • De Sardet: I’m not here to tempt my luck. Are you in charge?
  • Corporal Kathrin: That’s right. What do you want from me?
  • De Sardet: From you? Nothing. We are here to arrest the commander’s lieutenants.
  • Lieutenant Werner: Is that right? Now this ought to be good! And for what crime would that be?
  • De Sardet: You know very well. For high treason.
  • Lieutenant Werner: Ohh, and you think that my men are just gonna let you, without so much as blinking an eye?
    • Intuition (2) - Attempt reasoning with the soldiers.
      • De Sardet: Why would your men risk their lives and their families’ well-being to serve your greedy ambitions? Gentlemen, you have been manipulated. I imagine you were promised riches and high station on the island? Told that with such a prize you would be free of the services of the merchants, the mages, and the scholars? But do you imagine for an instant that the Nauts would risk losing their precious clients for you? That the Continental nations that you’ve betrayed would accept that you might return to their lands? You would be condemned to remain on this island, isolated and forever banished from the Continent. I only hope that you are leaving no one behind you, because you will never see them again.
      • Corporal Kathrin: You make sense, we have too much to lose in this story. I’m sorry, Lieutenant, but you’re gonna have to deal with this yourself. Do with him what you feel you must.
      • (Enter combat against Lieutenant only)
    • Engage combat.
      • De Sardet: Whether they move or not, it matters little!
      • Lieutenant Werner: I must admit, you are not short of courage!
      • (Enter combat)
  • Lieutenant Olga: I thought I heard some ruckus out here! Soldiers, ready weapons, we are under attack!
  • Coin Guard: Reputation -1
  • (Enter combat)
  • De Sardet: Stop! The person we were here for has been brought into submission.
  • Lieutenant Dieter: What did you want with Lieutenant Olga?
  • De Sardet: To arrest her. She’s made some unfortunate decisions. You’re not obliged to do the same.
  • Lieutenant Dieter: Very well. We are dropping our weapons, soldiers! That dog’s hide doesn’t deserve our sacrifice.
  • Lieutenant Ludger: What are you doing here? Who let you in? I demand an explanation!
  • De Sardet: It seems that your men are a little distracted this evening, Lieutenant. It is understandable, with all that's been going on. You are under arrest as well as your commander!
  • Lieutenant Ludger: But… What is this? I recognize you, you’re the governor’s emissary. Soldiers! Ready weapons!
  • Coin Guard: Reputation -1
  • (Enter combat)

Enter the Coin's barracks[]

  • (If the recruits are met in the hallway and Síora is present)
    • Young Recruit: Wait a minute! What’s that savage doing here? What do you think you’re doing? Lay down your arms and surrender!
    • De Sardet: That’s not happening!
    • (Enter combat)
  • (If the recruits are met in the hallway and Síora is not present)
    • Young Recruit: But, what are you doing here? Civilians are not allowed to enter the compound! Lay down your arms and surrender!
    • De Sardet: That’s not happening!
    • (Enter combat)
  • (If the recruits are met in the hallway while wearing Coin Guard uniforms and Síora is not present)
    • Charisma or Intuition
    • Young Recruit: They are both in the officers’ hall, Captain! On the other side of the landing, on this floor.

Search the Coin Guard commander's office[]

  • De Sardet: No one! I hoped he'd be here.
  • (If present) Vasco: Look! He’s left all of his mess behind. If we’re lucky, we may find some information in his papers.
  • De Sardet: The traitor had a contingency plan. He must be boarding a ship to another city as we speak!
  • (If present) Vasco: The admiral certainly can’t be aware of his plotting, she would never support him.
  • De Sardet: (If Vasco is present) I thought as much. She would have too much to lose.
  • De Sardet: According to these papers, Torsten was counting on some other officers to lead the attack. We must stop them too.
  • (If present) Petrus: And we must hurry! If we take too much time, they’ll probably run away and set their sights on another city. I dare not imagine what would happen if they took control of San Matheus!
  • (If present) Vasco: We’d better act fast then. One of our ships is certainly waiting for them at the dock, ready to set sail.
  • De Sardet: Let’s not waste any time, we will try to catch them at the port.
  • (If present) Petrus: It’s so sad, knowing that Kurt sacrificed his life for a commander who didn’t even trust him.
  • (If present) Vasco: I am glad I was not in Kurt’s place. He became a traitor unwittingly.
  • (If present) Aphra: So Torsten didn’t trust Kurt. He suspected him of being more loyal to you than to the Guard.
  • De Sardet: I should probably have taken more heed of him. He was my master and my friend, and I did not listen. (sighs) What a waste.

Go to the port as quickly as possible[]

  • De Sardet: Too late! The coward has escaped.
  • De Sardet: It’s not over. We need to warn our allies.
  • (If present) Síora: Let them fend for themselves! Would they have come to save you if the situation had been reversed?
  • (If present) Vasco: One thing is certain, we cannot save them both. You will need to make a choice between the two.
  • (If present) Petrus: I beg you, my child. We cannot let San Matheus fall into the hands of these traitors. What spiritual force will remain then to face the evil of this island and the deceit of the Alliance?
  • (If present) Aphra: And Hikmet cannot fall! Too many lives are depending on our research. If she falls into the hands of the Coin Guard, we’ll lose years of research in our hunt for the remedy.
  • (If present with Aphra or Petrus) Síora: Of course! Without your village, the island will fall! Monisainaig!
  • (If present with Aphra) Petrus: If your abject mixtures could do anything against the Malichor after all this time…
    • Choose to save San Matheus
      • De Sardet: Very well, let’s go to San Matheus.
      • Result: Begins quest Saving San Matheus, Hikmet will be taken over and you can no longer complete quests there.
    • Choose to save Hikmet
      • De Sardet: Very well, let’s go to Hikmet.
      • Result: Begins quest To The Rescue of Hikmet, San Matheus will be taken over and you can no longer complete quests there.

Coup Failed[]

(If Kurt’s first two personal quests were completed)

Speak to Kurt[]

  • Constantin: Kurt! What is—
  • Kurt: Dismissed, soldiers! Leave us, we have much to say.
  • Constantin: What is going on? I don't appreciate this attitude, Kurt. Must I remind you that these men all answer to me?
  • Kurt: Times change, Your Highness. Or rather they’re about to do so.
  • Constantin: Is that a threat? What are you hoping to accomplish? Don’t tell me—
  • Kurt: Silence! We have little time and none to lose.
  • De Sardet: Kurt, what are you talking about?
  • Kurt: The commander of the Coin Guard is here in New Serene at this very moment. He’s preparing a coup d’état. In the three cities of the island our men are going to eliminate the governors and their entourage.
  • Constantin: This is madness! How?
  • Kurt: How? You’ll go down as easy as plum pie and cherry wine. Standing behind every one of you is one of our men. You have entrusted us with your security. You are completely at our mercy.
  • Constantin: Then why did you send your men away and why are you telling us all of this?
  • Kurt: I’ve known you both for a very long time. Too long. I’ve come to know you, to respect you…and I've never reneged on a contract. These orders go against all that I am. A cold-hearted mercenary, definitely, but never a traitor. And so now you are forewarned. You must take action.
  • De Sardet: Thank you, Kurt. I will not forget this. Constantin, we need to get you to safety as well as your counselors.
  • Constantin: But I want to—
  • De Sardet: What? Take part? You can barely stand up. No, we must take you into the cellar.
  • Petrus: If I've completely understood what you’ve said, Kurt, the governors of our cities are also in danger.
  • Kurt: Yes. If you wanna keep your allies, Your Highness, you also need to warn them.
  • Constantin: Correct. We cannot let them fall into the hands of these traitors.
  • De Sardet: I will find the means to send them a messenger. Do you know where your conspirators are?
  • Kurt: It would seem I should be one of them. They are counting on me to eliminate both of you. The most urgent matter is to get our hands on the commander and his three lieutenants. The others are doing nothing but following orders. If we cut off the heads, they will fall into rank.
  • Constantin: I always knew you were a…good man.
  • Kurt: Don’t make me change my mind. We’d better be off. Now!

Ensure Constantin is safe[]

  • Kurt: We’ll certainly have to fight some traitors at Torsten’s behest on our way to the cellar. Stay on your guard.
  • De Sardet: Stay behind us, Constantin. You’re in no condition to fight.
  • Kurt: We must also think about the advisors, including your professor, and then we have to rescue Lady Morange.

The Coin Guard wants to take control of the island by assassinating all its governors.
  • Diplomatic Affairs Advisor: The Guard is everywhere, they could succeed!

Warn Madam De Morange[]

  • De Sardet: Lady Morange! Make ready to depart, we cannot remain here.
  • Lady Morange: But what is going on?
  • De Sardet: The Coin Guard has decided to take control of the isle. They plan to overthrow the governors. They were set on assassinating Constantin and his entire entourage.
  • Lady Morange: The idiots!
  • De Sardet: You are in danger. Do you know a safe place we could take you?
  • Lady Morange: Don’t worry about me. I have friends here, they will hide me. Go! And do be careful!

Warn the other governors[]

  • (Northern gate messenger)
  • De Sardet: Make preparations to leave. I have a message to communicate immediately to the governor of San Matheus! You must tell the Mother Cardinal that the Coin Guard is preparing a coup d'état. Her life and those of her entourage are in grave danger.
  • Messenger: Very well, Your Excellency. I’ll leave immediately.
  • (Eastern gate messenger)
  • De Sardet: Messenger? Be ready to leave at once! You must warn the governor of Hikmet that a conspiracy is underway targeting him.
  • Messenger: Uh…It-It’s just that, I-I can't leave the city just yet.
  • De Sardet: What are you talking about? The order comes from the governor. What more do you need?
  • Messenger: Uh…It-It-It’s just that I-I was told if I left the city today, it-it would cost me my life.
  • De Sardet: Who said that? The commander’s men, I suppose?
  • Messenger: I-I don’t really know, but they were heavily armed and they pay very well.
    • Try a bribe. (100 gold)
      • De Sardet: If it's a question of money... How much did they promise you?
      • Messenger: A lot.
      • De Sardet: You should be ashamed of your cupidity. Here, this should do it. Well?
      • Messenger: Your Excellency is extremely generous. I shall leave, immediately.
    • Charisma - Attempt to convince him.
      • De Sardet: And so you are prepared to betray your prince and country for a few coins? Don’t you understand that the reason I am standing before you is because the Guard failed to take this city? Do you know the punishment reserved for traitors?
      • Messenger: I, uh… Very well, Excellency, I’ll leave immediately.
    • Force his hand.
      • De Sardet: It would seem drawing arms is the only way to convince you. En garde!
      • (Enter combat)
      • Messenger: Mercy! Mercy! Don’t kill me! I shall carry the message!
      • De Sardet: That would be in your best interest. Go! Run!
  • Kurt: The commander must be in his upstairs quarters, preparing the attack. We should try to reach him discreetly.
  • De Sardet: We could try to go through the tavern's kitchen?
  • Kurt: That's one way to do it...or we could use the scaffolding to access the upper floor directly. But it's visible from the dormitories, and I know that the young recruits were ordered to stay there.
  • De Sardet: They will not suspect us if we're wearing guard uniforms. Do you know where the three lieutenants you told us about are located?
  • Kurt: Ludger is an instructor, he'll be in the right wing of the barracks. As for the other two, they'll be at the tavern. Olga and Werner are in charge of the Guard's...uh, "secondary" activities, in the basement.
  • De Sardet: I see. Our priority should still be to stop Torsten. We will worry about the others later.

Come back another day.
      • (Enter combat against Lieutenant only)
    • Allow Kurt to intervene.
      • De Sardet: Kurt?
      • Kurt: The real question is why would they stand up for an egotistical vermin like yourself? Who, for his personal advancement, would condemn the rest of us to an eternity on this isle. Cut off from the world, without supplies and surrounded by furious islanders, what a great idea! Come on now, give yourself up, imbecile! Only you and your companions are crazy enough to believe such a plan had legs.
      • Corporal Kathrin: Sorry Lieutenant, but Kurt is making sense.
      • (Enter combat against Lieutenant only)
    • Engage combat.
      • De Sardet: Whether they move or not, it matters little!
      • Lieutenant Werner: I must admit, you're not short of courage!
      • Corporal Kathrin: Weapons!
      • (Enter combat)
  • Lieutenant Olga: Soldiers, ready weapons, we are under attack!
  • De Sardet: We have been sent by the governor, Constantin d’Orsay.
    • Propose money to end the combat. (150 gold)
      • De Sardet: Take this money and let’s stop this now.
      • Lieutenant Dieter: You give your word that we’ll suffer no repercussions if we lay down arms?
      • De Sardet: You have my word.
      • Lieutenant Dieter: Very well. We are dropping our weapons, soldiers! That dog’s hide doesn’t deserve our sacrifice.
      • (Enter combat against Lieutenant only)
    • Charisma - Convince them to leave it at that.
      • De Sardet: Your lieutenant is accused of high treason, for having participated in an attempted coup d’état. As you can see for yourselves, the attempt failed. Are you also ready to be accused of treason, because of your loyalty to your lieutenant?
      • Kurt: I doubt it. I’m sure they’re gonna make the wise decision. Isn’t that right, Dieter?
      • Lieutenant Dieter: You give your word that we’ll suffer no repercussions if we lay down arms?
      • De Sardet: You have my word.
      • Lieutenant Dieter: Very well. We are dropping our weapons, soldiers! That dog’s hide doesn’t deserve our sacrifice.
      • (Enter combat against Lieutenant only)
  • Lieutenant Ludger: What are you doing here? Who let you in? I demand an explanation!
  • De Sardet: It seems that your men are a little distracted this evening, Lieutenant. It is understandable, with all that's been going on. You are under arrest as well as your commander!
  • Lieutenant Ludger: But… What is this? I recognize you, you’re the governor’s emissary. And Kurt? You had your orders!
  • Kurt: Sorry, but forced to betray someone, I decided it would be the less likable of the lot.
  • Lieutenant Ludger: Traitor!

    • Kurt: Soldiers!
    • Young Recruit: Captain!
    • Kurt: We have a message for the commander. Where is your instructor?
    • Young Recruit: They are both in the officers’ hall, Captain! On the other side of the landing, on this floor.
    • Kurt: Very well. At ease, soldier.

Reach the office of the Coin's commander[]

  • Kurt: Shit! We’ve arrived too late.
  • De Sardet: Do you know where Torsten could’ve gone?
  • Kurt: No, but we’ll certainly find some information about it in these papers.

Search the Coin Guard commander's office[]

  • (After picking up the Message to Commander Torsten)
  • Kurt: Torsten suspected that I would denounce him and he was prepared to leave this place. We must catch up to him. He cannot get away with this!
  • De Sardet: Let’s go!

Prevent the Coin Guard commander from fleeing[]

  • Kurt: Torsten is a snake, but he’s clever. Apparently, he suspected I would refuse to follow his orders.
  • De Sardet: He must’ve been told about our attack on the ghost camp, and drew his own conclusions. He knew you better than you thought he did!
  • If Torsten is arrested
    • Torsten: The Guard, we’re moving out. Break camp! We are no longer welcome here. And so…these snake-oil merchants defy us by sending their watchdog. Let’s show them what Guards are made of!
    • (Enter combat)
    • Torsten: Come here, you pathetic dog!
    • De Sardet: The game is over for you, Commander!
    • Result: Torsten is arrested, immediately transported to the Guard jail in the basement
  • If Torsten flees
    • De Sardet: Too late! The coward has escaped.

Assess The Situation With Constantin[]

Note: This is technically a separate quest.

  • Constantin: Do I have the time to return and see those dear to me?
  • De Sardet: Constantin? How are you feeling?
  • Constantin: Death is on my doorstep, and all hope has flown through the window. Come closer. What ill tidings do you bring?
  • De Sardet: I thought you would like to know that the Coin Guard’s attempt to take control of the island has failed.
  • Constantin: (exhales) This is excellent news, the kind I’ve not had in a great while! Thank you, Kurt, were it not for your loyalty…we were lost. And as for you, my fair cousin…you know what I owe you. Not only have you looked out for me, like always, but you have protected my advisors.
  • Petrus: Yes. And if Your Highness would permit, I would like to relay our most sincere gratitude from all of Thélème. Thanks to your message, the Mother Cardinal was able to thwart the commander’s plans. By the grace of the Illuminated, the city is saved and the traitors punished as they should be.
  • (If present) Aphra: The Governor Burhan thanks you as well. Your message was instrumental in stopping Hikmet, and our research, falling into the hands of these brutes.
  • (If Aphra is present) Constantin: It is my fair cousin that you should thank, my lady!
  • If Torsten and lieutenants were arrested
    • Constantin: I was told that you were able to catch the commander and his underlings before they were able to flee?
    • De Sardet: Barely, but yes, they are going to have to pay for their crimes.
    • Constantin: I cannot remember if the traitors are hung before being quartered or if it is the contrary. Enough talk of ruffians! They failed! And for that, I again thank Kurt.
  • If Torsten fled and lieutenants were arrested
    • De Sardet: Alas, the instigator of all this tragedy slipped through my fingers.
    • Constantin: I was informed that the commander was able to leave the island. I wish him luck in finding a port that will welcome him. And you were able to catch his lieutenants. The squires will pay for the crimes of their masters, as happens too often. Enough talk of ruffians! They failed! And for that, I again thank Kurt.
  • If Torsten was arrested and lieutenants fled
    • Constantin: I was told that you were able to catch the commander before he got away?
    • De Sardet: Barely, but alas, his lieutenants managed to escape.
    • Constantin: I care little for the underlings, the commander will pay for all of them. Do you happen to know the punishment we practice for treason? Oh yes...I remember now. Enough talk of ruffians! They failed! And for that, I again thank Kurt.
  • Kurt: If Your Highness is looking for a means to translate his gratitude, gold is a present that is always appreciated.
  • Constantin: I imagine that you shall name a new commander?
  • Kurt: Yes. I will discuss the matter with loyalist officers, but I think I know who will be elected.
  • Constantin: I hope it is someone whom we can trust. We do need soldiers, but loyal soldiers above all.
  • Kurt: We are well aware that the Guard’s reputation has been tarnished. We will not make the same mistake twice. Sieglinde is solid and loyal. I have fought beside her.
  • Constantin: You have my complete trust, Kurt. You have amply earned it.
