Spoiler warning: The following text contains spoiler for the plot
Amidst the issues with Constantin and High King, De Sardet receives a letter from Madam de Morange noting that the De Vespe family from the Congregation of Merchants has notified of their arrival on the island and desire to meet with Constantin and De Sardet. Speaking to Madame de Morange, De Sardet learns more of the family - they are from Serene's rival city of Peren and envious of Serene's and d'Orsay family's influence over the Congregation. Additionally, they are well-known for assassinations.

It is revealed that Aurelia De Vespe, family's head's favourite daughter, has arrived on the island and wants to meet with De Sardet. At the meeting she informs De Sardet that her father and Prince d'Orsay have arranged for a marriage between her and Constantine and she has arrived with documents to prove it and go through with it. She tasks De Sardet with retrieving stolen documents to prove her claims. The tasks turns out to be a set up as Aurelia has sent assassins to eliminate De Sardet as documents are retrieved at the staged attack site. De Sardet eliminates them instead and confronts Aurelia. She dismisses the accusations as simply wanting to test De Sardet and turns over the marriage contract.

She also notes that is is not to be trifled with given De Vespe's reputation - even her own husband and her love was murdered by her brother as part of political games. She now threatens De Sardet with compromising information that will be revealed to governors of other factions if her plans are in any way disrupted. De Sardet sets out to retrieve the compromising documents in both Hikmet and San Metheus. Documents have details on De Sardet's companions, letter proving that Constantin's mother ordered the assassination of his older half brother so Constantin would be heir, and also information about De Sardet's disputed heritage - for which De Vespe's believe is due to Livie De Sardet having a bastard as Marc De Sardet was gone for a year when baby De Sardet was presented at court. De Sardet is also forced to deal with propaganda leaflets spread around New Serene which aim to turn the population against Cosntantin and De Sardet.

Mr. De Courcillon confirms that the marriage contract is fake but notes that the faked seal is needed to prove it. De Sardet prepares to strike back against Aurelia and first gathers information from Nauts who originally transported her crew to the island. Many of the Nauts who had direct contact have gone missing, with Aurelia wishing to eliminate them so they would not reveal her plans, and De Sardet must rescue them. Saving the Nauts, and killing some of Aurelia's crew, De Sardet retrieves a fake seal from her camp and returns to New Serene. There, Madame de Morange also needs to be saved as she has been poisoned by Aurelia.

Finally, De Sardet arrests Aurelia in the New Serene palace. Her protests are dismissed with all the compromising evidence and she is sent to jail. De Sardet can then also chose to keep or destroy the documents gathered by De Vespes on the companions.
