Thélème is a theocracy ruled by the priest-mages of the clergy, who hold both political and spiritual authority. The nation’s entire structure revolves around faith in the Enlightened. Every aspect of life—education, governance, justice, and war—is shaped by religious devotion. Social hierarchy is based not on birth or wealth, but on faith and magical aptitude, though political intrigue and internal competition are still common among the clergy.

A powerful nation supported by priest-mages capable of wielding light magic, Thélème is both a spiritual power and a formidable military force. Its architecture, rituals, and even military banners reflect its dedication to divine light and purity.

History[]

Before it was a nation, Thélème was a movement founded by Saint Matheus, the first to receive the blessing of the Enlightened. He passed this holy knowledge to his disciples, who later established a structured clergy after his death. As Matheus’s influence spread, his followers built the foundations of Thélème and began a mission of conversion across the continent.

Saint Matheus’s life and voyages remain the cornerstone of Thélèmean faith. Before his death, he embarked on a sea journey with two disciples to bring the Enlightened’s light to new lands. Only one, Saint Lucius, returned, claiming that Matheus had reached a distant island where he converted its native inhabitants and created a land of perfection. Believing this island to be the same as Teer Fradee, Thélème’s colonists arrived there about ten years before the events of GreedFall, convinced that salvation and the cure to Malichor could only come from converting the island’s people.

According to legend, Matheus’s final days were spent among the islanders. However, some hints suggest that he found a new source of inspiration in the native deity En on mil frichtimen, a truth the Thélèmean clergy refuses to accept.

Politics[]

Thélème is governed by its clergy, who hold both spiritual and political authority. Leadership is based on faith and magical aptitude rather than noble lineage. Political intrigue occurs within the clergy, particularly among the more influential priest-mages, but all authority remains rooted in religious hierarchy. The nation’s foreign policy focuses on the conversion of other nations to the Enlightened’s faith. This has resulted in alliances with some groups, such as the Deutan Empire and parts of the Congregation of Merchants, while putting Thélème in direct conflict with the Bridge Alliance.

Culture and society[]

Faith defines every aspect of Thélèmean society. The nation’s population worships the Enlightened, the one true God, and their clergy interprets His will. Worship is conducted through sermons, public processions, and acts of purification that blend divine magic with ritual practice.

Magic—especially light magic—is regarded as a divine gift, and those capable of wielding it are believed to have been chosen by the Enlightened Himself. The clergy educates its citizens to be disciplined, pious, and obedient, and heresy is punished harshly.

Despite its theocratic structure, Thélème’s society is divided between different religious orders and ranks within the Church. Intrigue, ambition, and rivalries among high-ranking members are frequent, revealing that even a nation devoted to light is not free from the shadows of power.

Subfactions[]

Thélème contains several subfactions within its religious structure, the most notable being the Ordo Luminis and the Missionaries.

The Ordo Luminis acts as an inquisition, dedicated to rooting out heresy and corruption. Founded by Saint Gregorius, a disciple of Saint Matheus who remained in Thélème, the order operates with secrecy and brutality. They are known to use torture, imprisonment, and public executions in the name of purification.

The Missionaries make up most of the clergy and focus on conversion and diplomacy. Historically, their work targeted the mainland, but with the discovery of Teer Fradee and the founding of San Matheus, their efforts expanded overseas. More moderate than the Ordo Luminis, they favor persuasion over violence and often serve as diplomats to other nations. However, their idealism sometimes leaves them seen as naïve by their peers.

Legal System[]

Thélème’s laws are guided by its religion. The clergy, particularly the Ordo Luminis, enforce moral and religious compliance, punishing heresy, idolatry, or any opposition to their interpretation of the Enlightened’s will. Punishments for heresy or ungodly acts can include imprisonment, execution, or other forms of coercion, as evidenced by the Ordo Luminis’ actions on Teer Fradee. Beyond these cases, the texts do not specify a formal legal code or judicial system.

Involvement[]

GreedFall[]

Although it has long been locked in conflict with the Bridge Alliance, and weakened by the ravages of the Malichor, the discovery of Teer Fradee renewed its hope. The island resembles the one described by Saint Lucius, where Saint Matheus is believed to have ended his days. Convinced that redemption and the cure for Malichor lie in converting the island’s inhabitants, Thélème continues its holy mission with renewed zeal.

In GreedFall, Thélème plays a central role as one of the three major continental factions vying for influence over Teer Fradee. The nation has established the city of San Matheus as its colonial stronghold and base for missionary activity. The clergy believes that the island is sacred ground, tied to the final journey of Saint Matheus, and that its conversion is the key to ending the Malichor plague.

The player interacts with Thélème through both diplomatic missions and personal quests, navigating the tension between their faith and the island’s native beliefs. The faction’s involvement is marked by internal division between the Ordo Luminis’ fanaticism and the Missionaries’ more moderate approach.

Several quests expose the darker aspects of Thélème’s rule, including the inquisition’s persecution of natives and the Church’s efforts to suppress knowledge that contradicts their doctrine. The player’s choices determine whether peace or open conflict arises between Thélème and the island’s tribes.

Despite its decline due to the Malichor and the long war with the Bridge Alliance, Thélème remains a formidable power—driven by faith, sustained by magic, and convinced that divine truth can be found only through the Enlightened’s light.

Trivia[]

  • The word thelema is the English transliteration of the Koine Greek noun θέλημα (pronounced [θélɛ:ma]), "will", from the verb θέλω (ethélō): "to will, wish, want or purpose". Mentioned as Thélème by 16th century French writer François Rabelais, Thelema is most often regarded as a religion but it is also often called a philosophy.
