Old Countries in a New World is a main quest in Greedfall.

Objectives[]

  • Meet the Thélème governor and ask about the malichor.
  • Meet the Bridge Alliance governor and ask about the malichor.
  • Talk to Constantin about the two nations' leads about the malichor.

Dialogue[]

Meet the Thélème governor and ask about the malichor.[]

  • (Approaching San Matheus entrance)
  • Guard: Halt! In the name of the Enlightened One, present yourself!
  • De Sardet: [Sir | Lady] De Sardet, emissary of the Congregation of Merchants on Teer Fradee. I have come to present my regards to your governor.
  • Guard: We have been expecting your visit, Your Excellency. Welcome. May He light your way.
  • (Approaching Place of Punishment - cutscene)
  • Inquisitor Aloysius: Do you renounce your gods?
  • (The native warrior is brought to him) Inquisitor Aloysius: Answer me!
  • Native Warrior: Why? Why are you doing this?
  • Inquisitor Aloysius: Behold your so-called gods, your demons: they burn, they are nothing! You shed tears for this creature while your heart should be full of joy, welcoming the Light. Forget your pagan foul teachings, embrace the true faith!
  • Native Warrior: You are mad!
  • Inquisitor Aloysius: Renounce your gods! (He kills the native warrior)
  • Inquisitor of the Ordo Luminis: Inquisitor.

If Síora is present[]

  • Inquisitor Aloysius: You! Stop where you are. The pagan stink of these soulless natives taints you. You bring demon-spawned barbarians through our gates.
  • Síora: This man just killed some helpless souls in front of our eyes, and he calls us barbarians.
  • De Sardet: Who are you to address me with such familiarity?
  • Inquisitor Aloysius: I am the Inquisitor Aloysius, and you will be going nowhere, lest your answers give me satisfaction. Do you believe that the God of Light is the one and only god?
  • Síora: Don’t tell me that you are going to humor this crazed assassin!
  • De Sardet: If I want to complete my mission, I believe I have no other choice.
    • Confirm your faith
      • De Sardet: Yes, I believe it to be so.
      • Inquisitor Aloysius: Really? If that’s the case… What is the name of the most holy of men, he who transmitted the divine testament?
      • Síora: For how long are you going to stand this questioning? He insults you.
      • Inquisitor Aloysius: Silence, demon spawn! I am not asking you the questions.
        • Timotheus
          • De Sardet: Uhh… I believe his name to be Timotheus, no?
          • Inquisitor Aloysius: How dare you pretend to be a believer, and not know the name of our Holy Prophet.
          • (Proceed to combat)
        • Matheus
          • De Sardet: Everyone in the world knows that the Holy Prophet and founder of Thélème is named Matheus.
          • Inquisitor Aloysius: You seem well-versed in your reading of the righteous faith.
          • (Proceed to next question)
        • Be evasive
          • De Sardet: I admit my ignorance. In my home, we call him nothing more than the “Holy Prophet.”
          • Inquisitor Aloysius: Hmm, that is not exactly the response I was hoping to hear.
          • Síora: You shall have to learn to live with it. We have tolerated this interrogation long enough.
          • Inquisitor Aloysius: Your companion’s attitude reveals your lack of faith and commitment.
          • (Proceed to combat)
      • Inquisitor Aloysius: You seem well-versed in your reading of the righteous faith. One final question, and you may continue on your path. What gift did his sacred divinity award us when we accepted the words of his divine prophet?
        • The Magic of Light
          • De Sardet: He gave us magic. But it is a rather tricky theological enigma, many would argue that he offered us far more than that.
          • Inquisitor Aloysius: Precisely, precisely!
          • Inquisitor Aloysius: Your answers blur, and your tongue wavers. You are no true believer! Your words seem tainted in lies, ruse, and deceitful purpose.
          • (Proceed to combat)
        • The Salvation of Our Souls
          • De Sardet: The salvation of our souls?
          • Inquisitor Aloysius: Only an infidel could be so blind to refuse the daily gifts of the Divine!
          • (Proceed to combat)
        • Be evasive
          • De Sardet: Hmm… I'll answer that these gifts are so numerous that only mentioning one would be blasphemy.
          • Inquisitor Aloysius: An evasive response… that certain theologians would accept, perhaps.
          • Síora: You shall have to learn to live with it. We have tolerated this interrogation long enough.
          • Inquisitor Aloysius: Your companion’s attitude reveals your lack of faith and commitment.
          • (Proceed to combat)
    • (Charisma) Insist on his diplomatic function
      • De Sardet: Diplomacy may seem to you of little import, but I doubt that your governor will be of a similar opinion. Aggression towards an emissary of another nation is an error that could lead to war.
        • (If successful)
          • Inquisitor Aloysius: You cannot hide from the Divinity behind politics, but very well, I leave you in divine hands…this time. I shall allow you to continue along your path. I am certain ours will cross again. And be aware that where so ever you wander, you shall be weighed, measured, and judged.
          • (End conversation)
          • Thélème: Reputation +1
        • (If failed)
          • Inquisitor Aloysius: Your attempts to avoid answering speak for themselves. Answer my question.
          • (Must choose another dialogue option)
    • Renounce your faith in this god
      • De Sardet: No, I'm not a believer. What are you going to do to me now? Burn me at the stake?
      • (Proceed to combat)
Combat[]
  • Inquisitor Aloysius: Your very presence in our holy city is outrageous blasphemy! May He guide my hand.
  • (Enter combat)
    • (Upon defeat) Inquisitor Aloysius: Enough! This time brute force has prevailed, but the Light always triumphs in the end. I will not forget our encounter, and I am certain that we shall meet again.
    • Thélème: Reputation -1

If Síora is not present[]

  • Inquisitor Aloysius: You! You wear the mark of the impure pagan cult of the natives. I am Inquisitor Aloysius, and by authority of my title, I order you to explain yourself.
  • De Sardet: The mark on my face is by no means impure. You are walking on thin ice and are close to committing a grave diplomatic error.
  • Inquisitor Aloysius: Diplomacy? If the truth of the Enlightened is obscured, then our relations are tainted and of no value. Answer my questions, or receive the punishment reserved for heretics.
    • Confirm your faith
      • De Sardet: Yes, I believe it to be so.
      • Inquisitor Aloysius: Really? If that’s the case… What is the name of the most holy of men, he who transmitted the divine testament?

          • Inquisitor Aloysius: Precisely, precisely!
          • (If “Be evasive” was chosen for the first question) Inquisitor Aloysius: The time has come to render my verdict. I need time for reflection.
          • Inquisitor Aloysius: I shall allow you to continue along your path. I am certain ours will cross again. And be aware that where so ever you wander, you shall be weighed, measured, and judged.
          • (End conversation)
          • Thélème: Reputation +1

    • (Upon defeat) Inquisitor Aloysius: Enough! This time brute force has prevailed, but the Light always triumphs in the end. I will not forget our encounter, and I am certain that we shall meet again.
    • Thélème: Reputation -1
  • (Approaching Mother Cardinal's palace)
  • (If present) Kurt: I wish I had been given an excuse to put this madman to the sword! But you did well! Congratulations, you are already a great diplomat.
  • De Sardet: It seems to me you’re being sarcastic.
  • Kurt: Me? My apologies, my [lord | lady]. It wasn’t my intention.
  • (If present) Vasco: You are now under the stern eye of the God of Light. Hope that your underwear’s clean.
  • De Sardet: It seems like you do not hold the priests of Thélème in high regard.
  • Vasco: It’s mostly that I do not trust them. They’re hotheaded. You did a good job.
  • (If present) Síora: Do you really believe all the things you told him?
  • De Sardet: Would that bother you?
  • Síora: I don’t know… but your god seems austere, and your priests are terrifying.
  • (Entering Mother Cardinal's palace)
  • Petrus: Young [man | lady]? Pardon me, are you not part of the new governor’s entourage?
  • De Sardet: I’m his cousin, and I'm accompanying him on his mission to Teer Fradee. What can I do for you, Father?
  • Petrus: Bishop Petrus. How divinely fortunate this is. Did you know that I had the honor of meeting you at your uncle’s court when you were a child? I would never have imagined that you would grow up to resemble the island natives so closely.
  • De Sardet: The island was yet to be discovered, how could you have known?
  • Petrus: (laughs) You haven’t lost your clever little tongue! You were always quite a remarkable young [boy | girl]. I’m on my way to New Sérène as an ambassador to the new governor. Do you think there would be room for me to accompany you? The roads are not truly safe.
  • De Sardet: I must first meet the Mother Cardinal to present my respects on behalf of my cousin.
  • Petrus: I will accompany you, and then we can take the road together. I’m so happy our paths have crossed once again.
  • (Approaching Mother Cardinal)
  • De Sardet: Your Eminence, in the name of the Congregation of Merchants, I present my best regards.
  • Mother Cardinal Cornelia: May the Light bless you and accompany you on these grounds, with inspired guidance.
  • De Sardet: I thank you. We truly wish that this visit will strengthen the ties between our two nations.
  • Mother Cardinal Cornelia: I learned that you crossed paths with that of Inquisitor Aloysius.
    • (If the conversation with Aloysius ended in combat)
    • I’m extremely sorry that this visit took a violent turn. Aloysius’ faith is sometimes too absolute. I hope that you have it in you to look beyond it and forgive his zeal.
    • (If the conversation with Aloysius was resolved diplomatically)
    • I beseech you to forgive his zealous nature; his faith is absolute. And I congratulate you to have appeased him, your faith and your diplomatic skills honor you.
  • De Sardet: Another subject brings me as well: the Malichor, the horrible blood plague decimating our peoples.
  • Mother Cardinal Cornelia: A terrible matter that worries us all and reveals our imperfections and sinful nature. For He would never have allowed such an evil to spread without deeper reason, a fault. Our theologians are certain that the Malichor is the work of a curse, and we have discovered that this island is home to a cult that venerates willfully a horrifying demon.
  • (If present) Vasco: What a fortuitous coincidence. A practical excuse for sending the Inquisition out to set the island ablaze.
  • (If present) Síora: A demon? An evil spirit? It’s very strange, I know no clan that worships this sort of troubled spirit.
  • Mother Cardinal Cornelia: We must unearth this cult and tear it out by its sinister, sinful roots. We started to investigate a village not far from here where strange happenings have been reported.
  • Petrus: I have begun investigations, and I confirm that a demon is certainly active in the area.
  • Mother Cardinal Cornelia: Alas, the population is very secretive and we have great difficulty gleaning any useful information. But if the Congregation would help us with this matter… In other words, if the Malichor troubles your cousin as much as myself… Report to his Majesty that the destruction of this pagan cult is the only way to eradicate the plague, and his help in obtaining any information from the natives is extremely welcomed.
  • De Sardet: Be certain that your message will be transmitted, Mother Cardinal. I look forward to our next encounter.

Meet the Bridge Alliance governor and ask about the malichor.[]

  • (Approaching outpost outside Hikmet)
  • Guard: Halt! What’s your destination, [milord | milady]?
  • De Sardet: Just into town. I am an emissary of the Congregation and am here to discuss matters with your governor. Why the checkpoint?
  • Guard: We’ve got orders to verify all comings and goings, the roads are becoming dangerous. Do you have anything particular to report?
  • De Sardet: Nothing out of the ordinary.
  • Guard: Well then, good travels, [milord | milady].
  • (Approaching Hikmet entrance)
  • Guard of the Alliance: Halt! Your names, titles, and business at hand.
  • De Sardet: [Sir | Lady] De Sardet, emissary of the Congregation of Merchants on Teer Fradee. I have come to present my regards to your governor.
  • Guard of the Alliance: Your papers seem to be in order. Welcome to Hikmet, Your Excellency.
  • (Approaching Governor Burhan’s palace)
  • (If present) Kurt: Here’s Governor Burhan’s palace. I believe that he's a renowned scholar. But beware, he’s also a politician…with words covered in honey, but as dangerous as my weapons.
  • (If present) Síora: You… You’d better go meet this governor without me. We are at war! I’m not certain that I can remain calm if I see such a man.
  • (If present) Kurt: The little one’s not wrong. You came to flatter him. The sailor is less likely to cause an incident. But you are the diplomat!
  • (If present) Petrus: I think it would be better for me to stay here if you want to preserve your image with the Alliance. My mere presence by your side would be perceived as an insult.
  • (Attempt to enter Governor Burhan’s palace with Petrus)
  • Guard: Your Excellency? I’m very sorry but I can’t let you in. For safety reasons, people from Thélème are not tolerated at the palace. Do you understand?
  • Petrus: Yes, of course! I’m so dangerous that I could attack the palace all by myself.
  • (Approaching Governor Burhan)
  • De Sardet: Your Excellence, it is an honor to meet you. Allow me to present my sincerest regards in the name of the Congregation of Merchants.
  • Governor Burhan: And allow me to wish you, and your cousin, a warm welcome to the island. In the hopes that this visit will help prolong the profitable relations between our two nations.
  • De Sardet: Likewise. Nevertheless, another question brings me: the Malichor. The Prince d’Orsay hopes that these new shores will bring us new possibilities, even a remedy.
  • Governor Burhan: It is an area that concerns us greatly, but be assured, we are studying it acutely. Our doctors and alchemists are particularly interested in the flora of the isle. It’s extremely varied and different from our own. In fact, we have sent a group of explorers into a very promising sector. Alas, we’ve had no news from them for quite some time now. We are hoping that nothing has happened. We would have sent a patrol to investigate, but we cruelly lack the means to do so. The natives have proven aggressive, even hostile to our studies, and have attacked us regularly.
  • (If present) Síora: You ask the question why? You steal our lands, gouging the earth in sacred places, and now our people are disappearing. It’s enough to drive one to unsheathe a blade, do you not agree?
    • Ask Síora to be quiet
      • De Sardet: Be still, Síora! It’s not the time, nor is it our purpose here!
      • Síora: I warned you! My tongue will not be stilled when such words are cast upon us.
      • De Sardet: You have made yourself heard, let it be enough!
      • Governor Burhan: I thank you, Excellence. As I was saying…
      • Síora: Reputation -1
      • Bridge Alliance: Reputation +1
    • Ask Síora politely to let you speak
      • De Sardet: Síora, please, I understand how you feel, but this isn’t the right time.
      • Síora: I am sorry, you are right. My apologies, Your Excellence, continue please.
      • Governor Burhan: Hmm… Yes, as I was saying.
    • Take Síora’s side
      • De Sardet: She's not wrong, Your Excellence. The acts of your own people have brought this aggression down upon you.
      • Governor Burhan: I should’ve guessed that those birthmarks you share would make you sympathetic to their cause. I was hoping diplomacy would prevail. I have overestimated your skills in the matter. As I was saying.
      • Síora: Reputation +1
      • Bridge Alliance: Reputation -1
  • Governor Burhan: We are obligated to maintain all of our able-bodied men here, in order to protect the city. But we would be happy to share with you the results of our research, if—
  • Guard of the Alliance: Your Excellency!
  • Governor Burhan: This insolent interruption is untimely and unwelcome!
  • Guard of the Alliance: I deeply regret, Excellency, but one of our frontier posts has just suffered a brutal attack!
  • Governor Burhan: Report then, and be precise.
  • Guard of the Alliance: The natives attacked us by surprise, our men were massacred. Our frontier post is lost.
  • Governor Burhan: One more act of barbary! Dismissed, soldier. Where was I… Yes! We would be most pleased to share our discoveries with our allies, if your cousin would send us a party to help us find our lost expedition. I could show you to which region they were sent.
  • De Sardet: I thank you for the information and will let him know.
  • Governor Burhan: If you are of a mind to accord me another request, I would be truly grateful.
  • De Sardet: I'm listening.
  • Governor Burhan: As you have not failed to observe, our troops, as well as our caravans, have been suffering incessant attacks. The merchants, including your own, are raided, often killed, and certain goods have become scarce.. Captain Reinhild, who commands our outpost in the plains, has communicated his incapacity to protect them. Considering that certain of your own fellow countrymen are involved…
  • De Sardet: You would like me to lend a hand? I will see what I can do, Your Excellency.

Talk to Constantin about the two nations' leads about the malichor.[]

  • (If you have not returned to Constantin since meeting Petrus)
    • Constantin: Cousin! You have returned to me. Your absence was sorely felt.
    • De Sardet: You don’t appear to be in top form. Are house intrigues keeping you from finding proper sleep?
    • Constantin: No, nothing to bring me nightmares as of yet. I’m blaming it on the change of diet. Now, tell me what adventures you’ve been up to. If you only knew how bored I grow behind these walls!
    • De Sardet: I would like, if you would allow me the honor, to introduce Bishop Petrus, emissary of Thélème.
    • Petrus: Your Highness. May the Light warm you in its holy embrace.
    • Constantin: Enchanted to meet you, my father.
    • Petrus: I’ve come here to present respects from Thélème, and best wishes from the Mother Cardinal.
    • Constantin: She has my most sincere thanks. But before speaking further, I would like to discuss matters with my cousin, if you would be so kind.
  • (If you have previously returned to Constantin since meeting Petrus)
    • Constantin: My dear cousin! Come closer and tell me what brings you.
  • Report the Encounters with the Governors
    • De Sardet: I’ve been to the neighboring cities as you’ve asked of me.
    • Constantin: Tell me then, was your journey adventurous?
    • De Sardet: Well, I was able to gain audience with the governors, give them your regards, and glean some information.
    • Kurt: I would not have allowed anything bad to happen to him, Your Highness.
    • Constantin: Oh, it’s just us here, Kurt. Why not continue to call me by my given name? Carry on with your story, cousin. I'm impatient to know what secrets our illustrious neighbors have discovered.
    • De Sardet: The Bridge Alliance believes that a remedy could possibly be found by studying the local flora. They are quite motivated but their research expedition has gone missing and there is no sign of life. And since they themselves are under constant attack, they cannot spare a rescue party to investigate. The Mother Cardinal, in her opinion, believes the Malichor to be the result of a curse.
    • Petrus: A curse cast by a demon, an evil creature worshiped by a cult of island natives. If you would allow me to second the request of our Mother Cardinal, we are in dire need of your help. Our inquisitors are hardly diplomats, and… But I should let you finish, my son.
    • De Sardet: They have started their investigations in a village where strange events have been taking place, but they’re unable to get to the bottom of it… The population keeps its secrets. And Thélème hopes that we might help learn more about the cult.
    • Constantin: This is all extremely interesting. You have lived up to my expectations, as always! That said, we find ourselves between the rock and the hard place. The Bridge is already in open conflict with the island natives, Thélème and their inquisitors… We’re going to have to tread on eggshells, but let’s follow all the clues to their mysteries. We need to help them continue their investigations, perhaps one will lead us to something useful. I don't have a lot of men as well you know, and since I only trust you among them, take Kurt and any others that seem useful. I wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to you.
    • Petrus: If you would allow me, Your Highness, I would be honored to assist your cousin on [his | her] investigation.
    • Constantin: Very well then, you could start by indicating the precise location of your nasty village.
    • Petrus: Of course, Your Highness, I should have thought of that sooner. Allow me to mark the location on your map, my [son | daughter].
    • De Sardet: Thank you. Have no fear, Constantin, I will take care of all matters at hand.
