Dialogue[]

Talk to Kurt[]

  • Kurt: Green Blood! There's something I would like to talk to you about.
  • De Sardet: I’m listening.
  • Kurt: I recruited a young man for the Guard a few months ago. Talented. Very talented. And honorable. I've been tracking his progress and I learned that he's been sent to the barracks in New Serene. I would like you to meet him so that you can give me your opinion.
  • De Sardet: My opinion? On what?
  • Kurt: Ever since our departure from Serene I've spent nearly every second at your side. But I have clear standing orders to ensure the protection of Constantin, and I don't know his guards. Not well, in any case.
  • De Sardet: I see. You've been thinking this recruit might be a suitable personal guard.
  • Kurt: Precisely. And your opinion has weight. So then, would you like to accompany me to meet him?
    • Accept to meet the recruit immediately
      • De Sardet: But of course. Let's go.

Find the Young Recruit in the Barracks[]

  • Young Recruit: Captain!
  • Kurt: Soldiers.
  • Recruit: May we be of service?
  • Evoke the subject of Reiner
    • Kurt: I'm looking for the soldier Reiner. Is he in the barracks?
    • Recruit: I never heard that name before, Captain!
    • Young Recruit: Never heard the name, Captain!
    • Kurt: That's strange. I'm certain he was sent here.
    • De Sardet: Maybe he’s been moved since then. When was the last time you’d heard news of him?
    • Kurt: In Serene, just before our departure…but that’s been a couple of months.
    • Recruit: If I may, Captain, You should have a word with the quartermaster.
    • Young Recruit: That’s right, Captain! He has a register with the affectations of every recruit in the Blue-Silver regiment. Anything else, Excellency?
  • Ask for formal presentations
    • De Sardet: Rank and assignment, soldiers.
    • Recruit: Recruit first class, Blue-Silver regiment, 8th company, Your Excellency.
    • Kurt: The Blue-Silver regiment is made up of men attributed to serve the Congregation of Merchants. I’m one of them. And the 8th company was sent to Teer Fradee, with two other companies.
  • Ask them their assignment
    • De Sardet: What is your charge?
    • Young Recruit: Maintain order in the city, Excellency!
  • Manfred: Hello, Excellency. What can I do for you?
  • Ask him about the recruit Reiner
    • Kurt: I've been looking for one of my recruits, goes by the name of Reiner. I would like for His Excellency to meet him.
    • Manfred: Reiner? I'm sorry, Kurt. I thought you'd been informed.
    • Kurt: Informed about what?
    • Manfred: He is dead. He was found, drowned in the port harbor day before yesterday. I was told he had too much to drink and fell in. I'm extremely sorry, Kurt. The young men drink more than they can handle when they're on leave.
    • Kurt: That's bollocks! That lad isn't the sort to sully himself with drink. I don't believe it!
    • Manfred: People change. When they're far from home, the lads have little else to do.
    • Kurt: I still don't believe it.
    • Manfred: Listen, you might as well go and ask the doctor down in the morgue. I might’ve misunderstood what was reported to me. Those doctors use such long words for simple things.
    • De Sardet: Excellent idea. At least you'll see it for yourself.
    • Kurt: You're right. Let's go.

Investigate the morgue[]

  • Medical Examiner: Well, now. A visit. Can I help you with something?
  • Ask about the death of Reiner
    • De Sardet: We are here concerning the matter of the recruit Reiner.
    • Medical Examiner: Are you family or friends?
    • Kurt: You could say that. I'm the one who recruited the lad.
    • Medical Examiner: What I can do is tell you what I can.
  • Ask what date the boy arrived.
    • When was the body brought to you?
    • Medical Examiner: Day before yesterday. In the early morning.
  • Ask for details concerning the circumstances of the death.
    • De Sardet: Can you tell me anything about the circumstances?
    • Medical Examiner: All I know is what I was told by the fellows who brought the body to me. They said they'd spent the evening together at the tavern. That they'd had a great deal to drink. A horrid habit the soldiers all seem to share.
    • Kurt: Reiner was not a drinker.
    • Medical Examiner: Maybe not. All the same he was drinking that night. He stepped outside for a moment and never came back in. His companions found him drowned in the bay early morn. And they brought him to me.
  • Ask for more details on the cause of death.
    • De Sardet: How then did he die, in your opinion?
    • Medical Examiner: He drowned. I'm sorry. It's regrettable, he was quite a young man.
    • Kurt: Yeah, and his death makes no sense. He didn’t drink, and he knew how to swim.
    • Medical Examiner: All the same, that’s what happened. I greatly regret it.
  • Ask to see the body.
    • De Sardet: Might we take a look at the body?
    • Medical Examiner: Um, no, I wouldn't recommend that. To see your friend in such a state…
    • Kurt: I’m a soldier, doc. I’ve seen a number of men in pieces. Let me see the young lad.
    • Medical Examiner: I…I regret, Captain, I cannot allow it.
    • De Sardet: I have as of yet to present myself. I’m [ Lady | Lord ] De Sardet, Legate of the Congregation of Merchants on Teer Fradee. And as the title infers, I have the power to inspect this barracks and everything it contains. Therefore, I must insist.
    • Medical Examiner: I see. A thousand pardons, Excellency. I should have recognized you and shown more respect. It’s the body in the middle. Examine him if you must, but please be so kind as to not leave a mess after you.

Find evidence of the lie[]

  • Examine the body
    • De Sardet: This one is just a boy. His face is still locked in an expression of pain. Kurt, is this your recruit?
    • Kurt: Yes, that’s my Reiner. Poor kid. I should’ve left him with his family where he is.
    • De Sardet: We’ll need to examine the body to learn more. Is that alright?
    • Kurt: He’s not the first young man I've seen with the lights gone from his eyes. Go on.
    • De Sardet: I’m no doctor, but this boy doesn’t seem to have drowned at all. It looks like he’s been beaten. It’s suspicious.
    • Kurt: The boy I knew would never have drunk himself senseless to the point he’d fall into the bay, I’m telling you.
    • De Sardet: I believe you, Kurt, but if we want to prove it, we’ll need to find more evidence.

Confront the doctor with his lies[]

  • De Sardet: Excuse me, Doctor, but you owe us a few explanations. This boy did not die by drowning.
  • Medical Examiner: It is absolutely the cause of death, I assure you. The science of death is a complex art and you are certainly not a doctor.
  • Show him his own notes
    • De Sardet: That is true, but you are. Do you recognize your own notes? Your writing is hard to read, but the word “drowning” never appears.
    • Medical Examiner: What an idiot! I should’ve burned those notes. I am truly sorry, I - I swear I have never ever falsified a report before. But I was given no choice in the matter.
    • Kurt: How’s that? What are you talking about?
    • Medical Examiner: Two men, lieutenants I believe, brought a body to me telling me the boy had drowned in an accident. I saw immediately this was a lie, but I did not push the matter. I began my examination, planning to submit my report to the quartermaster as per usual. But the men returned. I was told to forget what I’d discovered and say that he had indeed drowned, or else.
    • Kurt: Who were they?
    • Medical Examiner: I have no idea. I had never seen them before at the barracks. I - I guessed their rank by their uniforms.
    • Kurt: What colors were they sporting?
    • Medical Examiner: None. They must’ve removed the emblems of their regiment. Listen, it’s obvious that this boy was beaten repetitively and that was the cause of death. I have no intention of suffering the same fate.
    • De Sardet: Have no fear, Doctor, we will make no mention of your name.

Ask the intendant for his advice[]

  • Manfred: Hello, Your Excellency. What can I do for you?
  • Discuss Reiner’s death
    • Kurt: We have a situation, Manfred. Reiner didn’t drown. The doctor falsified his report. He was threatened and feared for his own life.
    • Manfred: You have to be pulling me leg! Who bullied the crow face?
    • De Sardet: Lieutenants that he didn’t recognize, alas, and who wore no regiment emblems.
    • Kurt: Which regiment was Reiner assigned to? I would like to have a word with his commanding officer.
    • Manfred: Let me have a look at the register. My memory isn’t what it once was. Stab my heart with a rusty blade. His name’s been crossed out! If I catch the bastard that did that!
    • Kurt: What mess was the boy into, Manfred? What could this be about?
    • Manfred: Your lad was in the 6th or maybe the 11th, before being reassigned to who knows where.
    • Kurt: Just like that? You out of everyone have to know where the recruits are assigned.
    • Manfred: Not of late. This isn’t the first lad who’s been reassigned all of a sudden at the drop of a hat. Each time I start complaining about it, I'm told they’ve changed regiments and it’s not my concern.
    • Kurt: Something truly bizarre is going on here. I don’t like this at all.
    • De Sardet: Let’s try and discover which company he was stationed at before this mystery reassignment.

Question the lieutenant of the 8th regiment[]

  • Ask for identification
    • De Sardet: What company do you serve, Lieutenant?
    • 8th Company Officer: The 8th company, Excellency.
  • Ask for her assignment
    • De Sardet: Where are you assigned?
    • 8th Company Officer: My company, the 8th company, is responsible for city and palace security. A capital assignment! As for meself, I'm essentially in charge of training and managing the recruits. We have quite a few here. The youngsters are attracted to the dream of Teer Fradee. And believe me, if we want them to live up to their duties, there’s no time to dally.
  • Ask about Reiner
    • De Sardet: We are investigating the death of a young recruit named Reiner. Do you know anything about the matter?
    • 8th Company Officer: No, sorry, Your Excellency. That name is…completely foreign to me, and I pride myself on knowing the names of all my recruits. As a matter of fact, they were all present at roll call.
      • Insist
      • De Sardet: Are you certain you have heard nothing about the death of this young man? We were told he drowned himself in the waters of the port.
      • 8th Company Officer: I am sorry, I truly can’t help you. I never met him and know nothing about what happened to him.
      • (End conversation)
      • Charisma - Attempt to convince her to speak
        • De Sardet: Come now, Lieutenant. I’m certain you’ve grown close to these youths you’ve been training. Does it not shock you that one of your own might kill a young recruit and attempt to cover it up? Let’s have a talk. We only want to help Reiner find justice.
        • (If failed)
        • I am truly sorry, Your Excellency, but what happens in the Coin Guard stays in the Coin Guard. Leave now, please? I can't say anymore.
        • (End conversation)
      • Let Kurt speak
        • Kurt: Lieutenant, the lad we’re talking about was one of my own recruits. Someone pretended that he’d drowned himself, while in truth he’d been severely beaten to death. Assassinated. You, more than anyone, should understand what I'm feeling, so if you have anything else to say…
        • 8th Company Officer: My condolences, Captain. I understand, and I'm sorry.
    • (If Charisma succeeds, or Kurt spoke)
    • 8th Company Officer: I don’t really know much about this affair. I’ve just heard people talking. And I know that it’s…frowned upon to broach the subject, especially with people on the outside.
    • Kurt: What happens in the Guard concerns only the Guard, I know that, but I'm not sure myself!
    • 8th Company Officer: Is that right? All I can tell you is that Reiner isn’t the first to vanish from his company. Other youths, the most promising among us, are regularly reassigned. I don’t know where they’ve gone, nor what they do. But we never see ‘em again. That’s all I can tell ya. Now leave me in peace.

Question the lieutenant of the 6th regiment[]

  • De Sardet: Good day, Lieutenant.
  • 6th Company Officer: Excellency. What's your pleasure?
    • Ask for identification
      • De Sardet: What company do you serve?
      • 6th Company Officer: The 6th, Excellency.
    • Ask about their assignment
      • De Sardet: To where are you assigned?
      • 6th Company Officer: The 6th company is in charge of exploration and expansion of the colony of the Congregation of Merchants on the island. We operate mainly in the wilderness areas, in direct contact with the natives. But don't worry, we respect to the letter Congregation directives and standing orders. We avoid all confrontation with them as much as possible.
    • Ask about Reiner
      • De Sardet: We're investigating the death of Reiner, a young recruit. Do you know anything about it?
      • 6th Company Officer: Sorry, your Excellency, that name doesn't ring a bell, and I know nothing about a death.
      • De Sardet: That's truly a pity.

Question the lieutenant of the 11th regiment[]

  • De Sardet: Hello, officer.
  • 11th Company Officer:
    • Ask for identification
      • De Sardet: Could you tell me which company you serve?
      • 11th Company Officer: The 11th, Excellency.
    • Ask about his assignment
      • De Sardet: What's your assignment?
      • 11th Company Officer: The 11th is assigned to road and outpost security for the Congregation on the island. As for me, I'm responsible for the training of recruits and the patrol duty roster.
    • Ask about Reiner
      • De Sardet: We are concerned about the death of a young recruit named Reiner. Have you heard anyone talking?
      • 11th Company Officer: Sorry, your Excellency, I'm not in a position to answer that.
      • Kurt: Why’s that?
      • 11th Company Officer: It’s just that, uh…I don't remember that name, that’s all. Sorry, Captain.

Investigate at the tavern[]

  • Speak to the recruit
  • De Sardet: Good day, soldier.
  • Recruit: Uh, good day, my lady…?
  • De Sardet: De Sardet, legate of the Congregation on Teer Fradee.
  • Kurt: Captain Kurt.
  • Recruit: Oh! I - excuse me, Excellency, I - I didn't know… Captain, I - I truly am sorry. At your service, milady…Excellency!
    • Ask for a formal presentation
      • De Sardet: Since you know who we are, present yourself, soldier!
      • Recruit: Ah, yes, milady. Recruit 2nd class Alric, Blue-Silver Regiment, 11th company, at your service.
    • Ask him to tell you his story
      • De Sardet: You don’t quite look like you've got the hang of all this. How long have you been in?
      • Recruit: I… Is it that obvious?
      • Kurt: It’s quite normal for a new recruit.
      • Recruit: I joined up four months ago. But at the beginning we were on board ship, you see… I don't know if that really counts. I started exercises when we got to New Serene. But I'm making progress, they say!
      • De Sardet: And do you like it here?
      • Recruit: I sure do, that’s why I joined the Guard! To come here, to leave the Continent, know what I mean?
      • De Sardet: I do.
    • Question him on Reiner
      • De Sardet: Do you know a recruit going by the name of Reiner?
      • Recruit: Reiner? I… It’s just… Excellency, please.
      • Kurt: The boy is terrified now that he knows who we are. So long as he’s in that state he’ll say nothing of worth. You should bring him a bottle to calm his nerves.
      • De Sardet: That will be all, soldier. Thank you.
      • Recruit: Uh, thank you, your Excellency.

Offer the Recruit a drink[]

  • Recruit: At your service, milady…Excellency!
  • De Sardet: Here, you seem tired and a little on edge. A drink would do you some good.
  • Recruit: It’s just that…I don’t know if I'm allowed.
  • Kurt: You’re on leave, or you wouldn’t be at the tavern. And why not?
  • Recruit: Yes, but this is his Excellency’s own bottle. I don’t know if I can.
  • Kurt: Drink, I tell ya!
  • De Sardet: Now then, why don’t you tell us what you know about Reiner?
  • Recruit: I didn’t…I didn’t serve with him! Well, not really, we just crossed paths. He was leaving the 11th when I joined. Everyone said he was good, strong, and, uh…followed orders. And then, poof! Lieutenant got this order and he wasn’t happy. And I mean really quite unhappy. And then Reiner, he was gone. We never saw him again. We’d asked where he’d been sent, but the lieutenant didn’t want to tell us. Said that it was none of our business. But you, he won’t be able to say no to you! You should go and offer him a drink too.
  • De Sardet: Where can we find your lieutenant?
  • Recruit: At the barracks.
  • De Sardet: Thank you, and watch yourself when leaving. Wouldn’t want you to fall into the bay.

Confront the lieutenant of the 11th regiment[]

  • Insist concerning Reiner
  • De Sardet: Are you sure that you can’t help us? Something terrible has befallen the poor boy.
  • Kurt: Let’s be perfectly straight: we know that Reiner belonged to your company. And as the acting lieutenant instructor, you certainly had him under your command. So just stop with the lies! We’ve lost enough time here.
  • 11th Company Officer: You know what they say: Guard business is well-guarded.
  • Kurt: And concerns only the Guard. Now unless you’ve lost your eyesight, you’ve a captain in front of you!
  • 11th Company Officer: I - I know, but this story is dangerous, Captain.
  • De Sardet: If you have so much as an ounce of respect for the boy, speak to us. Don’t you believe he deserves justice?
  • 11th Company Officer: Yes, of course, but you have no idea what’s been going on here. If word got ‘round that I've been talking… Come back after sundown, when there’s fewer folk.
  • De Sardet: Very well, we’ll be back.
  • 11th Company Officer: (sighs)

Wait until nightfall to talk discreetly with the lieutenant[]

  • De Sardet: We are quite alone now. You may speak to us.
  • 11th Company Officer: Reiner was indeed a member of my company, and an excellent recruit, but you already know that.
  • Kurt: Continue.
  • 11th Company Officer: One morning, I got a note telling me he’d been transferred from my company. He’d received a new assignment. I was so furious that I did my own little investigation, to see where he’d been sent. It wasn’t easy. No one wanted to give me answers. No one seemed to know anything. But one thing's for certain. Reiner wasn’t the only man to have…disappeared. I learned that a good many recruits, all the cream of the crop, had been reassigned. And finally, I learned about the existence of a phantom regiment.
  • Kurt: What sort of nonsense are you talking about?
  • 11th Company Officer: A sort of…secret, elite company that were following a special training program.
  • De Sardet: Where can we find them?
  • 11th Company Officer: I’ve no idea. I had to put my investigation to rest. Things were getting dangerous. I began to sense I was being watched. This regiment protects its secret at all costs with few scruples. If you wanna know more, the training officer of the 6th might know something. It’s been said he took part in one of their missions…alongside them.
  • De Sardet: Are you certain you’ve nothing more to tell me about this infamous secret regiment?
  • 11th Company Officer: I’ve told you everything I know, at the risk of ending up like Reiner, Excellency. Go and see the officer of the 6th if you want to learn more. And leave me alone now.

Obtain information about the ghost regiment[]

  • Ask about the Ghost Regiment
  • De Sardet: Tell me about the phantom regiment.
  • 6th Company Officer: About what? I…I have no idea what you're talking about, your Excellency.
    • Try to convince him
      • De Sardet: Come now, Lieutenant, you do realize that the activities of this regiment are particularly suspicious. Secrets, threats, fabrications. And maybe even an assassination! This resembles more the pursuits of a criminal organization than the honorable Coin Guard. Am I to conclude that you are involved?
      • 6th Company Officer: No! No. I assure you that isn't the case!
      • De Sardet: So then tell me what you know about the regiment.
    • Allow Kurt to speak
      • De Sardet: Are you certain you don’t know where this phantom regiment camp can be found?
      • 6th Company Officer: Absolutely certain. And to be honest, I hope I never hear about this matter again.
      • Kurt: Reiner was one of my recruits, Lieutenant. A young man that I admired. He was killed. His death was disguised. We’ve been lied to time and time again. Thanks to my friend, we finally learned that the boy had rejoined the phantom regiment. And so now, you’re gonna tell me all you know without being a weasel about it. Trust me, you don’t want me to lose my nerve.
      • 6th Company Officer: But… Captain…I—
      • Kurt: Now!
      • Coin Guard: Reputation -1
    • Bribe him
      • De Sardet: I do know that it’s frowned upon, even dangerous to delve into the matter, but I’m curious by nature. So, considering the risk you’d be taking to tell me what you might know, I'm in a favorable disposition to offer you compensation.
      • 6th Company Officer: That’s a handsome sum. That might allow me to distance myself from this nest of vipers for a time. Very well.
      • Coin Guard: Reputation +1
  • 6th Company Officer: I've seen the regiment, even fought beside them on an operation. On that occasion, our marching orders were kept secret till the last minute. We were asked to remove our regiment emblems, and our pay wasn't even recorded. And of course, we were ordered to speak to no one about it under any circumstances. I hope you realize the risk I'm taking, talking to you about all this.
  • Kurt: Have no fear, we understand. What was this operation?
  • 6th Company Officer: An attack. A lightning strike. On a caravan from the Bridge Alliance.
  • Kurt: Marvelous, a company that behaves like back alley bandits.
  • 6th Company Officer: I know, it really shakes up the honor code. The regiment is made up of young recruits carefully chosen, only the best make it through. The training is extremely arduous, and my guess is that Reiner isn't the only one who’s died from it. I know that they set up camp just outside the city, where the men live and train, but I'd be at a loss to tell you precisely where it’s found. Sorry, Captain.
  • De Sardet: Thank you, Lieutenant.

Conclusion[]

  • Kurt: This story is making me sick. Poor Reiner, if I’d known I'd never have recruited him.
  • De Sardet: I’m sorry, Kurt.
  • Kurt: This isn’t your doing. But these filthy phantoms or whatever they are, are gonna have to settle the debt, believe me.
  • De Sardet: You do realize that your own commander is certainly involved in this on some level? Outright clandestine operations could not have taken place without his approval.
  • Kurt: That he’s aware of the existence of the regiment, there is no doubt. That he approves of what they're doing…. It wouldn't be the first head that didn't know what his hands were up to.
  • De Sardet: What do you wish to do now?
  • Kurt: I'm gonna find the location of this camp. I have a few friends that can certainly help us. And when I know where to smoke out these bastards, I'll go and have a few fiery words. If you are of a mind to accompany me, two of us would not be too many to make sure they settle their debts.
  • De Sardet: Let me know when you discover where they are to be found.
  • Kurt: You can count on me.
