Dialogue[]
Talk to Kurt about the ghost regiment.[]
- Kurt: My contacts have spoken. I was able to discover the location of this Infamous phantom training camp.
- De Sardet: Do you think they should still be held accountable?
- Kurt: More than ever. You know that I recruited Reiner. I wanna know what kind of hornet’s nest I led him into. I wanna know what these men did. But I fear if I go alone I may not be able to control myself, and I won't learn anything. I need the help of my best student.
- Accept and take care of it now
- De Sardet: How can I refuse such a request? Well then, let’s go.
- Put it off until later
- Accept and take care of it now
Go to the ghost regiment's camp with Kurt.[]
- Rolf: I was informed of your arrival by my sentinels, but I didn't think it would be you, Kurt!
- Kurt: Rolf? You're the leader of this camp?
- De Sardet: You two know each other?
- Kurt: We trained together. We haven't seen each other in a long time. A very long time.
- Rolf: The world of warriors is very small, Kurt. What brings you here, my old comrade? And who are these people with you? They're not one of us.
- De Sardet: My name is De Sardet. I'm the legate of the Merchant Congregation.
- (If present) Síora: And I'm Síora, doneigad of the gais rad.
- (If present) Petrus: And I am Bishop Petrus. May the Enlightened guide you.
- (If present) Vasco: And I am Captain Vasco. No need to comment about our distance from the sea. I know.
- (If present) Aphra: Aphra. I'm a naturalist... I study flora to determine its medicinal properties.
- Rolf: These people sure are important. So? What are you doing here?
- Kurt: I've heard things about this place. About this very special camp.
- De Sardet: And we wanted to see what it was all about with our own eyes.
- Rolf: That's very nice of you, but visitors aren't welcome in this camp. What goes on here is only the Guard’s business.
- Kurt: Does the same apply to me?
- Rolf: Listen, Kurt, I can give you and your…friends some answers, but only because it's you. Anyway, knowing you as well as I do, I'm aware I'm not going to get rid of you that easily. So, what would you like to know?
- Ask him about the camp's purpose
- De Sardet: What is it you do here? And why is this place kept secret, even from your comrades in the Guard?
- Rolf: The natives have their magic, and we have to train elites to be able to face them. That's what we do here. Our role is…sensitive, and our location obviously cannot be revealed to the whole island.
- (If present) Síora: Does this man not realize that I'm a doneigad?
- Rolf: I noticed you're a native, but you're a friend of Kurt's. So I trust you will be discreet.
- De Sardet: I see the reason for this kind of training, the Bridge Alliance would be particularly interested in soldiers like these. And yet I've never heard of this…elite squadron.
- Rolf: We're still in the early stages of the program. We don't want to rush things. And our leaders demand secrecy. Orders are orders.
- Find out about the site’s organization
- De Sardet: This is a huge camp for such a secret location. How is it organized?
- Rolf: The main building is reserved for officers and the wounded. The front and rear of the camp are dedicated to combat training. But most exercises take place outside.
- De Sardet: Impressive. And how do you manage recruitment?
- Rolf: Only the best come here. Those who have combat experience. Once they arrive, they’re separated into two squadrons, each led and trained by a lieutenant. But you already know all this, Kurt. It must bring back memories.
- Kurt: Yes.
- Ask about the training received there
- De Sardet: Will you tell us about your training?
- Rolf: That's a sensitive topic. Most exercises take place in the field, to get the men used to it. The natives' knowledge of the environment gives them as much of an advantage as their magic. But if you want to know more, you should ask my lieutenant instructors.
- Discuss Reiner’s death
- De Sardet: Actually, we found out about this camp while we were looking for someone.
- Kurt: A kid I recruited. Reiner.
- Rolf: Oh, I didn't know he was one of yours. My condolences. I was told he died in an accident in the harbor.
- Kurt: Don't insult my intelligence, Rolf.
- Rolf: All right. Since you're here, I guess there's no point in lying to you anymore. The accident occurred during a maneuver. It's regrettable, but these things happen, you know.
- De Sardet: We've taken up enough of your time, Captain.
- Rolf: I agree, and I have things to do.
- Kurt: I'd like to question your lieutenant instructors, if you don't mind. To ask them about Reiner.
- Rolf: You've become a real sap. Fine, but try not to disrupt the day’s schedule too much. Goodbye.
- (After speaking to Rolf)
- Kurt: I’m sorry, I couldn't contain my anger.
- De Sardet: I noticed. Good thing you know this captain so well. I don’t think he would’ve let us investigate otherwise.
- Kurt: I’m not sure it’s a good thing, really.
- (If present) Síora: You don’t seem to like this man.
- (If present) Petrus (if present): Your aversion is clear, but, is it him that you hate, or what the camp represents, my son?
- (If present) Vasco (if present): Old barrack rivalries?
- (If present) Aphra: Knowing someone for a long time doesn't necessarily make them a friend. I understand.
- Kurt: Rolf doesn’t bring back good memories for me. But let’s continue. I wanna know what’s going on here.
Question the instructors.[]
- Kurt: Lieutenant!
- Lieutenant Instructor: Captain!
- Kurt: My friend here would like to learn more about this camp.
- Lieutenant Instructor: At your orders, Captain! Madam?
- Ask him about his squadron
- De Sardet: Can you tell us about your squadron?
- Lieutenant Instructor: The recruits who come here are the best. And in my squadron, they get even better. I don't know what else to tell you. They're disciplined, rigorous, and effective. Exactly what you'd expect from the best soldiers.
- Discuss the training
- De Sardet: What kind of training takes place in your ranks?
- Lieutenant Instructor: Combat in natural settings. Combat against the savages’ magic.
- De Sardet: Very curious about how you train against the magic the natives use.
- Lieutenant Instructor: These are complex, secret maneuvers. I'm very sorry, but I can't tell you anymore.
- Kurt: That's a pity, it would definitely be instructive.
- Mention Reiner’s case
- De Sardet: I heard the recruit Reiner trained here. What can you tell me about him?
- Lieutenant Instructor: Oh, he was a good one. He died a little while ago.
- Kurt: So we've heard. Your captain told us he died during a maneuver. Can you tell us more?
- Lieutenant Instructor: The training we do outside can be dangerous. Unfortunately, Reiner fell to his death in a ravine.
- De Sardet: He fell?
- Lieutenant Instructor: During a simulated ambush. I know, it's not glorious, but it happens. I'd like to get back to work now if you'll allow it, Captain.
- Kurt: Go on! We're gonna go talk to some of your recruits.
- Lieutenant Instructor: I hope that it won't take too long. We're all very busy here!
- De Sardet: We’ll be quick, Lieutenant.
- (After speaking with the first lieutenant)
- Kurt: The story about training against magic is a lie. This lieutenant has no idea what he’s talking about.
- De Sardet: So what could they be training recruits for here?
- Kurt: I don’t know. But whatever it is, I don’t like it.
- Kurt: Lieutenant!
- Lieutenant Instructor: Respectfully, Captain!
- Kurt: Here is my friend, the legate of the Merchant Congregation. She would like to ask you a few questions.
- Lieutenant Instructor: At your orders! I'm listening, sires.
- Ask for details about her squadron
- De Sardet: How do the various squadrons in this camp differ from one another?
- Lieutenant Instructor: The recruits I train are intended to carry out more…subtle actions.
- De Sardet: Really? What kind?
- Lieutenant Instructor: I teach them how to blend into the background, understand customs, observe, and know when to strike.
- De Sardet: That’s strange, these skills are normally associated with assassins, rather than soldiers.
- Lieutenant Instructor: These skills are always useful, regardless of the enemy or the setting.
- Find out about the training
- De Sardet: What kind of training do your men undergo?
- Lieutenant Instructor: I can’t go into details, but they learn discipline, and to outdo themselves.
- Kurt: You mean to blindly follow orders, even to their death.
- Lieutenant Instructor: But - I… No, Captain! We also teach them to analyze situations, so that they know when to act to avoid risking their lives!
- Ask her how she got there
- De Sardet: How did you become an instructor in this camp?
- Lieutenant Instructor: I have led numerous squadrons before. And I've trained hundreds of recruits on the continent. I worked with Captain Rolf in the past, and when I arrived on the island, he recommended me for this position.
- De Sardet: That’s impressive, and I expect that you’re familiar with the natives’ environment and magic.
- Lieutenant Instructor: Yes, yes, of course.
- Charisma - Try to corrupt her into revealing information about Reiner
- De Sardet: Kurt, don’t you think that someone this talented fits what we’re looking for? You see, we need to find someone who can replace Kurt to oversee my cousin’s security.
- (If successful)
- Lieutenant Instructor: Your cousin is the governor of New Serene, I’ve heard. It’s a prestigious position. I don’t doubt my abilities, but an offer like this, made so suddenly, must have a price.
- De Sardet: We can’t hide anything from you.
- Kurt: We’re trying to find out what happened to Reiner, a recruit who trained here.
- Lieutenant Instructor: That name doesn’t sound familiar. He must’ve been in the Shadow squadron.
- Kurt: The other lieutenant’s squadron?
- Lieutenant Instructor: Yes. I'm sorry, I haven't been much use to you. Did something happen to him?
- Kurt: He died. His body was thrown into the harbor to make it look like he drowned.
- Lieutenant Instructor: I guess it was one of your recruits. My condolences, Captain.
- Kurt: We’ll question some of your soldiers.
- Lieutenant Instructor: At your orders, but please be quick. I’d like to get on with training.
Question the recruits.[]
- Kurt: Soldier!
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Yes, Captain?
- Kurt: At ease. We have some questions for you.
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Me? At your orders, Captain.
- Ask how the training is going
- De Sardet: You look exhausted. Is training that rough here?
- Ghost Camp Recruit: It’s difficult at first, but you get through it. Taming fatigue, that’s the key to it all.
- De Sardet: Haven’t you ever wanted to stop? You’ve never doubted your vocation?
- Ghost Camp Recruit: I'm not a coward, nor a weakling. “The strength of the Shadow”!
- Kurt: What is that? Your motto?
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Our squadron’s, Captain!
- Discuss his squadron comrades
- De Sardet: You seem concerned about your comrades. You keep looking at them.
- Ghost Camp Recruit: No, no, not at all.
- Kurt: Are you afraid of what they might think of you?
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Absolutely not, Captain. We are all of one mind in this squadron. We are very united.
- Ask him about Reiner
- De Sardet: Since this is such a close-knit squadron, you must’ve known Reiner.
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Yes, of course. But he’s not part of the squadron any longer. He left.
- Kurt: Really?
- Ghost Camp Recruit: I don’t know what you’re trying to get me to say, Captain. Reiner left the squadron because he was sent on a mission. There’s nothing more to say.
- Kurt: Sorry mate, but that’s not what happened.
- Ghost Camp Recruit: I - I don’t know anything more.
- De Sardet: Thank you, that will be all.
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Thank you, madam. Captain.
- (After speaking with the first ghost camp recruit)
- Kurt: Good heavens, I feel like a bogeyman.
- De Sardet: These recruits are clearly scared to let any information slip.
- Kurt: It's as if their life depended on it.
- Kurt: Hello, soldier.
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Captain!
- De Sardet: We need information. Your instructor authorized us to question you.
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Of course, madam. I’m listening.
- Discuss his training with him
- De Sardet: How would you describe your training? Do you train outside the camp much?
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Yes, we do. Well, not exclusively.
- De Sardet: Really? Yet we’ve been told that your unit specialized in actions over difficult terrain.
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Er, yes, I think so. Well…yes, that’s true.
- Kurt: Problems remembering things, soldier?
- Ghost Camp Recruit: No, Captain!
- Ask him about his squadron
- De Sardet: What’s it like in your squadron?
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Very good. The phantom squadron is made up only of the very best.
- De Sardet: Do you trust your comrades?
- Ghost Camp Recruit: We’re like five fingers on one hand, madam. I would trust them with my life.
- Kurt: You’ve sure got the military spirit.
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Yes, Captain!
- Discuss accidents during maneuvers
- De Sardet: We’ve learned that a recruit died in an accident during a maneuver. Does this happen often?
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Uh, no, of course not. Only to those who aren’t…strong enough.
- De Sardet: That’s strange, I was told that this recruit was very talented.
- Ghost Camp Recruit: I…I - I don’t know what to tell you. It - It’s possible. If you don’t mind, I'd like to get back to my training.
- Kurt: He seems afraid that an accident might befall him too.
- Ghost Camp Recruit: No! It’s not that…I just don’t want to fall behind schedule.
- De Sardet: Very well, go on.
- (After talking to the second recruit)
- Kurt: These kids are scared to death.
- De Sardet: Yes, this boy’s answers about his training seem pretty dubious to me.
- Kurt: They can’t hide the lies.
- Kurt: Soldier!
- Wilhem: Captain!
- Kurt: At ease, soldier.
- Discuss his training with him
- De Sardet: We’d like to learn more about your training.
- Wilhem: I have nothing to say about it, my lady.
- Kurt: Really? Go on, it’s not a difficult question. What do you do during training?
- Wilhem: Is this a test, Captain?
- De Sardet: No, it’s not a test. You may speak freely.
- Wilhem: Well…training is difficult, but we can’t complain, Captain.
- De Sardet: That’s an interesting way to phrase it.
- Ask him about his squadron
- De Sardet: You’re very united in this squadron, at least that’s what I’ve been told.
- Wilhem: “United”... You could say that, yes. Until death.
- De Sardet: That’s rather sinister. Does the name Reiner sound familiar to you?
- Wilhem: Yeah… Well, no, not really.
- Kurt: You seem rather hesitant. Afraid of being reprimanded by your lieutenant?
- Wilhem: No! Well, not at all. It’s just that I can’t tell you anything about recruit Reiner. And we’re lucky to have the lieutenant as our instructor, Captain.
- Kurt: We should leave this soldier to his work.
- De Sardet: Your name, soldier?
- Wilhem: Wilhem, uh, first class recruit, Wilhem, Specter squadron.
- De Sardet: Keep it up, Wilhem.
Find a way to drive the instructors away.[]
- Kurt: Lieutenants! Report.
- Female Lieutenant Instructor: Captain?
- Kurt: Could you give us a few minutes and take us around the site? I’ve never been here before, and I'm curious to see what goes on.
- Male Lieutenant Instructor: I’m not sure if we can, Captain.
- Female Lieutenant Instructor: We are on duty, Captain.
- Kurt: Right, Lieutenant. Let’s go!
- Lieutenant Instructor: I—
- Kurt: Are you coming with us?
- De Sardet: No, thank you, I'd rather stay here, take in some fresh air.
- Kurt: As you like. In that case, see you later!
Question Recruit Wilhem again.[]
- De Sardet: Wilhem, we need to talk. And don’t worry, Captain Kurt will make sure your superior doesn’t come this way.
- Wilhem: Why are you doing this?
- De Sardet: We didn't think you'd say anything as long as she was here.
- Wilhem: If you noticed, others will have to. They’ll make me pay.
- De Sardet: Even more reason to talk. If we have proof, we can take action and close the camp!
- Wilhem: (sighs) Very well. What would you like to know?
- Discuss what’s really going on here
- De Sardet: What's really going on here? We know that Reiner didn't die in an accident.
- Wilhem: This is supposed to be a training camp for the Guard’s elite. Only the most talented recruits are allowed to join. This is an “immense honor,” an “extraordinary chance”... That's what we're told every day. But in reality, it's just hell.
- Ask for details about the trainings
- De Sardet: Tell me about the training you undergo here.
- Wilhem: It’s more torture than anything else. We’re constantly beaten and humiliated, and the slightest complaint only leads to more blows. They even push us to police one another, so we don’t dare talk. Whatever the orders, we put our heads down, grit our teeth, and obey.
- (If present) Síora: And they call us barbarians. We could never put our own children through this.
- (If present) Petrus: It reminds me of the Ordo Luminis’ interrogation methods. The poor buggers end up admitting to anything at all…accepting the unacceptable.
- (If present) Vasco: All they leave you with is your survival instinct. Obey, or die. It’s inhuman.
- (If present) Aphra: I've known scientists who've led these kind of experiments on animals... The results are terrifying. Even the most gentle animal can become a killer.
- Wilhem: I heard them tell you about the specialist training against the natives in hostile environments. But what they teach us would be more useful for assassins.
- Mention Reiner and what happened to him
- De Sardet: As for Reiner, do you know what happened to him?
- Wilhem: Yes. One day he just couldn’t stand it any longer. He disobeyed orders, he fought back, and people got hurt. That’s when things blew up. They summoned him for night training.
- De Sardet: What does that entail?
- Wilhem: It doesn’t have much to do with real training. They call us up for it at the last minute. The weakest serve as punching bags for the others, who are encouraged to beat them. If we refuse, we too become the targets…so we join in, and strike. If you’re looking to punish Reiner’s murderer, you can start with me. We all have his blood on our hands.
- De Sardet: thank you for telling us all of this. You should get back to your comrades.
- Wilhem: I hope you can do something, have this camp closed. Otherwise I'll soon be as dead as Reiner.
- De Sardet: We understand the risk you’ve taken. We won’t let you down.
Pretend to leave the camp.[]
- Kurt: Thank you, really. That was truly fascinating.
- Female Lieutenant Instructor: Captain.
- Kurt: I’ve seen everything I needed to see. You can leave us.
- Male Lieutenant Instructor: Yes, Captain.
- Kurt: Shall we go?
- (Upon exiting the camp)
- De Sardet: Kurt, Wilhem has spoken.
- Kurt: What did he tell you?
- De Sardet: He said the recruits go through hell. They are humiliated, spy on each other, get bullied, It's essentially torture. Reiner wouldn't stand for these methods; he rebelled and was summoned for night training.
- Kurt: Are you sure he used that term?
- De Sardet: Yes. But he told me it's not really training, that recruits are summoned.
- Kurt: And the others beat them, sometimes to death. I know.
- De Sardet: You know about this kind of training?
- Kurt: Yeah. I thought it was a thing of the past. What a monster. How dare he!
- De Sardet: I'm so sorry. I'm…lost for words. Tell me, did you learn anything new?
- Kurt: I scouted out the site. There's two parts of the barracks we should look at more closely. Rolf’s quarters and the basement, which they refused to open for me.
- (If present) Síora: You're full of anger, cengots. Take a deep breath and think. Then tell us your plan.
- (If present) Petrus: These people’s methods are despicable, but we can’t just charge into the fray. Innocent people could get hurt. What do you want to do, my son?
- (If present) Vasco: We can’t just barge in and hope they give up. What’s your plan?
- (If present) Aphra: This is an elite military camp. I hope you've really thought your plan through!
- Kurt: Let's wait for nightfall. We'll sneak into the camp unseen, search the barracks, the private quarters, and then the basement.
- De Sardet: We might also try to find out where this night training takes place.
- Kurt: Yes. I wouldn't want other young recruits to lose their lives tonight. Especially Wilhem.
Search Captain Rolf's office.[]
- (Upon re-entering the camp after nightfall)
- De Sardet: Strange. There is no one left in this part of the camp.
- Kurt: Maybe they’re in the combat pit behind the barracks, I saw it when I visited the camp. Or they’ve already left for their “night training.”
- (Upon entering the barracks)
- Kurt: Let’s find Rolf’s office. He surely has the key to the basement.
- (Upon finding the Letter from the Commander in Rolf’s office)
- De Sardet: This letter is disturbing, Kurt. It confirms that several deaths have been disguised in order to keep this camp secret. But it says that the recruits trained here have been assigned to governors from different cities. And yet I'm sure that Constantin knows nothing about these elite units. The conclusion of the letter also confirms that the commander is pleased with what's been going on here.
- Kurt: So Torsten knew.
- De Sardet: So it seems. Including about the deaths.
- Kurt: He's gone too far. He dishonors us all! Sieglinde was right.
[]
- De Sardet: This room… What could’ve happened in here?
- Kurt: I know the smell only too well. Fear. Blood. Death.
- (If present) Síora: These people have turned this place into a site of suffering. It will take years of work to erase its traces.
- (If present) Petrus: The Ordo Luminis would surely envy such a place if they knew it existed.
- (If present) Vasco: And to think I complained about the Nauts’ training practices, but this…this is horrific, Kurt.
- (If present) Aphra: People were tortured here.
- (Upon finding the Formation Report)
- De Sardet: This document explains a lot. They torture the soldiers to break them. Reiner shows up on this list more than once. He gave them a lot of problems.
- Kurt: Those who resist too much are lynched during night training. Rolf, you’ll pay for this.
- De Sardet: Kurt, Wilhem’s name was added, to tonight's training.
- (If present) Síora: That's the young man who helped us, isn't it? They will probably kill him for it!
- (If present) Petrus: These monsters want to make him pay for the help he gave us! The poor child will probably not survive.
- (If present) Vasco: The boy will pay the ultimate price for having helped us.
- (If present) Aphra: They want to make him pay for talking to us... He won't survive it!
- Kurt: We can’t let them kill him! We must stop this training immediately!
- De Sardet: The risk is that Rolf will ambush us.
- Kurt: If this boy dies because of us, I will never forgive myself.
- (Upon exiting the basement)
- Kurt: I refuse to let these recruits pay for the bastards who manipulate them. Let’s avoid spilling blood in vain.
- (If present) Síora: You surprise me once again, Kurt. You’re full of compassion for these youngsters.
- (If present) Petrus: These children are victims, yes, but they are armed victims. Are you sure they’ll spare us in return?
- (If present) Vasco: You’re a good captain, Kurt, but I hope you understand that they won’t hold back on us.
- (If present) Aphra: If we had the time, we could find a way to put them all to sleep, but we haven't...
- Kurt: They’re just kids. There has to be a way to reason with them.
- De Sardet: We’ll do what we can, Kurt. I can't promise anything more.
- Kurt: I refuse to let these recruits pay for the bastards who manipulate them. Let’s avoid spilling blood in vain.
Save Recruit Wilhem from his nightly punishment.[]
- (Upon reaching Wilhem in the forest)
- De Sardet: Despite what Wilhem told me, I wasn’t expecting this. He’s getting destroyed!
- Kurt: They'll kill him! We can’t let them get away with this.
- De Sardet: Stop! We won’t let you kill this boy like you killed Reiner!
- Kurt: Soldiers! Do you realize what you’re doing?
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Captain! But—
- Lieutenant Instructor: You shouldn’t be here! This time you won’t get away with it! To arms!
- Charisma - Reason with them
- De Sardet: When my master of arms was in the Guard, he always repeated, “Fight with honor”! What honor is there in lynching one of your own when he is defenseless? What honor is there in being forced to kill one another the moment one of you refuses to toe the line?
- Ghost Camp Recruit: None. We followed orders, nothing more.
- Kurt: You’ve been manipulated. But it’s not too late to refuse all of this. To act with honor!
- Ghost Camp Recruit: You’re right, Captain! It’s over, Lieutenant. We will no longer beat our own.
- Lieutenant Instructor: Imbeciles! Traitors!
- Intuition (1) - Discuss the letter
- De Sardet: Do you know what happens to those who die in this regiment? Their bodies are thrown out like those of rabid animals. If you die here, you’ll die without glory. Nobody will ever know what happened to you. I doubt that’s what they promised you when you joined the Guard.
- Ghost Camp Recruit: No! No, of course not.
- Lieutenant Instructor: A good soldier doesn’t fight for glory. He fights to be the best.
- Kurt: Really? Then the Guard really has changed. Did you recruits leave your families to end up lynched and thrown into a ditch?
- Ghost Camp Recruit: No! Y-you’re right, Captain. We never should’ve ended up here.
- Lieutenant Instructor: Traitors! Cowards! Deserters!
- Attack
- De Sardet: Kurt, if we want to save Wilhem, I fear we don't have a choice.
- Kurt: I’m afraid you’re right. These poor kids…just cannon fodder.
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Attack!
- Charisma - Reason with them
- De Sardet: Will you be all right?
- Wilhem: I’m wounded, but I'll survive, thanks to you. I’m eternally grateful.
- (If Charisma or Intuition were used)
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Come, Wilhem, we’ll help you get home. We owe you that at least.
- Kurt: I’m counting on you to bring him back to the camp in one piece.
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Yes, Captain.
- (If recruits were attacked)
- De Sardet: You’d better stay here until we’ve taken care of the camp’s captain.
- Wilhem: I’ll try to dress my wound in the meantime.
- (If Charisma or Intuition were used)
- Kurt: Well then, let’s go! We can’t let that vermin, Rolf, escape us.
- (Leaving the area)
- Kurt: Let’s hope that Rolf didn’t hear the sounds of combat. Surprise is our best ally.
- De Sardet: You’re right, let’s try to approach discreetly.
Arrest Captain Rolf.[]
Avoid casualties amongst the recruits.[]
- (Approaching the pit, if casualties among the recruits were avoided) Kurt: Nobody saw us. All we have to do is ambush them in the pit.
Upon jumping into the pit:
- (If casualties were avoided)
- Kurt: Rolf, you bastard, how could you be part of this disgrace!
- Rolf: You know that this is how the best soldiers are made! Soldiers, grab your weapons! Death to the traitors!
- (If casualties were not avoided)
- Rolf: (laughs) Kurt, you’re so predictable!
- Kurt: I knew you were a bastard, but I didn’t think you’d be part of this disgrace.
- Rolf: Have fun, soldiers! The traitors must die!
- Kurt: Stop! Soldiers, are you really gonna obey these scoundrels? Do I need to remind you of the Guard’s motto? Where is your honor?
- Lieutenant Instructor: I won’t repeat myself, recruits! Execute these traitors!
- De Sardet: Soldiers, listen to your captain! You are the victims of these monsters, and we are here to save you.
- (If casualties were avoided) We’re doing our best to avoid a fight, to spare your lives!
- (If casualties were not avoided) We surrendered without resistance, to avoid a fight and to spare your lives!
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Well, what do you want us to do? We have orders. And we know what will happen to us if we don’t obey!
- Lieutenant Instructor: Enough! To arms, attack!
- Promise them clemency if they surrender
- De Sardet: Put your weapons down and no one will get hurt!
- Lieutenant Instructor: Really? What do you think will happen when high command learns about this? You’ll be considered traitors and deserters.
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Death is all that awaits us. Attack!
- (Result: Must choose another option)
- Charisma - Convince them by mentioning Reiner
- De Sardet: Must I remind you what happened to Reiner?
- Kurt: And however many others perished to fuel the ambitions of this camp’s leader.
- De Sardet: Is this what you were promised when you were recruited?
- (If successful)
- Ghost Camp Recruit: No. No! Honor and glory. We’ve strayed far from all that. Let’s surrender. Anything is better than dying here like dogs!
- Lieutenant Instructor: How dare ye? You know what awaits ye!
- Kurt: Shut up, you idiots. You’re no longer in a position to threaten anyone.
- (If failed)
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Maybe not, but this is how one becomes an elite soldier… The best!
- Lieutenant Instructor: Exactly! And no tenderfoot in a silk suit would understand anything about it.
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Attack!
- (Result: Enter combat with lieutenant and recruits)
- Coin Guard: Reputation -2
- Intuition (2) - Make them understand the situation
- De Sardet: All this bullying and humiliation is only intended to turn you into weapons, not soldiers. And when a weapon is no longer needed, its owner throws it away rather than risk injury. That’s why Reiner was disposed of!
- Kurt: Being a soldier doesn’t mean being a puppet! Put your weapons down!
- Ghost Camp Recruit: They’re right, mates. I don’t want to end up in the harbor.
- Lieutenant Instructor: What do you think, soldier? You think we can trust them?
- It’s over, Lieutenant! These recruits won’t do your dirty work for you anymore!
- (If Wilhem was saved) Mention saving Wilhem
- De Sardet: It was nearly Wilhem’s turn tonight! It could have been any of you!
- Lieutenant Instructor: Lies! Only the weak fall! So we must prove that we aren’t among them!
- Kurt: Nonsense! I’ve seen more combat than any of you, and I've seen hundreds of soldiers die. Weak or not. I’ve seen this kind of camp before, full of torture and sadistic officers. I thought it was a thing of the past. But I was wrong…so help me make sure this camp really is the last of them.
- Ghost Camp Recruit: You…You’re right, Captain. If we don’t put down our weapons, this will never end!
- (Upon successful use of Charisma, Intuition, or mentioning Wilhem)
- Rolf: Congratulations, Lieutenant, you've trained cowards.
- Lieutenant Instructor: Their training wasn’t finished, Captain, and their speeches were so convincing.
- Rolf: Silence! Where is this second squadron? Should’ve been here a long time ago!
- Kurt: They’re not coming, Rolf.
- (If the recruits at Wilhem's rescue were convinced with Charisma or Intuition not to fight)
- De Sardet: They surrendered too. It would appear that your training methods aren’t very effective.
- (If the recruits at Wilhem's rescue were killed)
- De Sardet: The victims of your absurd manipulation died in vain.
- (If the recruits at Wilhem's rescue were convinced with Charisma or Intuition not to fight)
- Kurt: Now that you no longer have lackeys to send after us, Rolf, you'll have to get your own hands dirty.
- Rolf: I've dreamt of shutting that big mouth of yours up for so long!
- (Result: Enter combat with Rolf and lieutenant)
- Attack
- De Sardet: I don’t see a way to convince them to surrender, Kurt. I’m sorry.
- Kurt: Not as much as I am. It seems like it’s too late for them. What a waste.
- Coin Guard: Reputation -2
- (Upon defeating them)
- Rolf: Your men were thrashed. You disappoint me, Lieutenant. I expected better from your troops!
- Lieutenant Instructor: Sorry, Captain!
- Rolf: But where’s the second squadron? They should’ve been here a long time ago!
- Kurt: Forget them, Rolf, they’re not coming back.
- (If the recruits at Wilhem's rescue were convinced with Charisma or Intuition not to fight)
- De Sardet: They were smart enough to surrender. It’s just the two of you now.
- Kurt: Now that you no longer have lackeys to send after us, Rolf, you'll have to get your own hands dirty.
- Rolf: I've dreamt of shutting that big mouth of yours up for so long!
- (Result: Enter combat with Rolf and lieutenant)
- (If Wilhelm was not saved)
- Rolf: You’re finally here!
- Lieutenant Instructor: Sorry, Captain! The boy resisted longer than planned.
- (If Charisma failed or Attack was chosen)
- Rolf: I hope your troops are ready for a real fight. They just crushed your comrades!
- Lieutenant Instructor: Captain Kurt and these courtiers just decimated a whole squadron?
- Lieutenant Instructor: Don’t underestimate them. They were able to beat us—
- Rolf: Shut up! Your troops were weak and you’re the only one responsible.
- (Result: Will have to fight Rolf, lieutenants, and recruits)
- (If Charisma or Intuition succeeded)
- Rolf: You’re finally here!
- Female Lieutenant Instructor: Sorry, Captain! The boy resisted longer than planned.
- Rolf: You were spared the shame of seeing how far your comrades have fallen.
- Female Lieutenant Instructor: What happened?
- Male Lieutenant Instructor: They surrendered, like the weaklings they are.
- Female Lieutenant Instructor: That should make the next night training sessions interesting.
- (Result: Will have to fight Rolf, lieutenants, and one recruit; "Avoid casualties amongst the recruited" failed)
- Kurt: What have you done with Wilhem?
- Rolf: He received the punishment for traitors and insurgents, like Reiner before him!
- Kurt: Reputation -1
- De Sardet: Kurt, I’m terribly sorry. We should have—
- Kurt: —saved him first. We’re responsible for his death.
- (If present) Síora: You’re a bleeding heart, Kurt…but you know who’s really responsible.
- (If present) Petrus: By the Enlightened, Kurt, don’t let your guilt blind you when the boy’s murderers stand before you.
- (If present) Vasco: Don’t blame the wrong people, soldier. Those that slaughtered him stand before us.
- Kurt: You’re right. For Wilhem! For Reiner!
- Lieutenant Instructor: Recruits, attack!
- (Result: Enter combat with aforementioned enemies)
- (Upon exiting pit)
- De Sardet: Will you be all right, Kurt?
- (If Wilhem was saved)
- Kurt: Yes…yes, I'll be fine. I'm just glad to know that this camp won't kill anyone else.
- De Sardet: What about you, Wilhem?
- Wilhem: Thank you, for saving my life. Without you…
- Kurt: I hope you can forget about all this. This is not what the Guard is about.
- (If the recruits at Wilhem's rescue were convinced not to fight)
- Ghost Camp Recruit: I don't know if you'll be able to forgive us, Wilhem.
- Wilhem: I've been in your shoes on other nights. You didn't have the choice.
- Kurt: While we wait for this camp to close for good, you'll be under Wilhem’s command. You'll soon receive your transfer orders.
- Ghost Camp Recruit: At your orders, Captain!
- (if the recruits at Wilhem's rescue were killed)
- Kurt: In the meantime, you stay here to take care of survivors, Wilhem. I’ll make sure you receive your transfer orders quickly.
- Wilhem: I’ll do my best, Captain! Thanks again.
- Ghost Camp Recruit: Glad it's you, Wilhem.
- Kurt: You'll stay here for now. I'll send men I trust to come get you soon.
- (If the recruits at Wilhem's rescue were convinced not to fight)
- (If Wilhem was not saved)
- Kurt: Yes…yes, I'll be fine. I'm just glad to know that this camp won't kill anyone else. What a waste. I can’t believe these orders came from the top.
- (If Wilhem was saved)
- De Sardet: Will you be all right, Kurt?
- De Sardet: What do you want us to do?
- Kurt: I'll need backup if I really want to put an end to all of this. We must go see Major Sieglinde in New Serene. I need to tell her what was going on here.
- De Sardet: Are you sure she wasn’t involved?
- Kurt: Her? Never. She’s old school. She already held the commander at a distance, because she didn't like the direction the Guard was headed. He would’ve sacked her, or worse, if she didn’t have so much support within the Guard. I should’ve listened to her.
- De Sardet: There’s no use brooding over the past. Let’s go. We’ll go see her immediately.
Talk to Sieglinde in New Serene[]
- Kurt: Sieglinde, I need to talk to you.
- Sieglinde: What's the matter, Kurt?
- Kurt: We’ve just returned from a training camp. A secret camp, where elite soldiers are trained…through terror, humiliation, and torture.
- Sieglinde: Don’t tell me that…
- Kurt: Yes. One of my recruits died, and he wasn't the only one. It is designed to create a regiment of assassins.
- Sieglinde: I am sorry, Kurt. I knew something was wrong, but I never would’ve thought it’d go that far.
- Kurt: We put an end to it all. We had to. But Torsten allowed it, even encouraged it.
- Sieglinde: I told you that the commander’s ambition would end up leading us astray from the ideals of the Guard, and that we would pay the price for it.
- Kurt: Yes. At the time I told you, you were exaggerating. That he had his reasons.
- Sieglinde: What are you gonna do?
- Kurt: I’m going to speak out, Sieglinde, and reveal the commander’s “project” to the governor of the Congregation.
- Sieglinde: If I were as close to him and his family as you are, I would've done so a long time ago.
- Kurt: I know… I feel so stupid for not having understood Torsten’s scheme until now.
- Sieglinde: You’ve always been a loyal person, Kurt, and too many loyalties are sometimes hard to reconcile. But Torsten betrayed us all. I’m counting on you to make him pay for it.
- Kurt: Believe me, he won’t get away with it. Goodbye, Sieglinde.
- Sieglinde: Goodbye, Kurt. My men and I stand with you.
